MADELEINE PEYROUX- Dance Me to the End of Love

I was just listening to NPR, when "Dance Me. . ." being sung by Madeleine came on. The narrator posed the question of "What's Madeleine been doing for the last 8 years?" [I think it was 8 ~ you know, those of you living in Leonard-deprived areas, how it is on the rare occasion that anything by Leonard gets heard. Whatever's being said is secondary to the shock and realization that what you're hearing is 'Leonard'!]

Anyway, they used "Dance Me. . ." as the sound clip for announcing the segment on Madeleine that will air on Sunday. I didn't catch the time, and I'll probably be listening, anyway  . However, I have to say that Madeleine's cover is interesting in how she uses the words for a 'jazz'-type presentation, with the words being more vehicles for the inherent syncopation and rhythm of the jazz ~ rather than infusing them with the emotion that they are used to convey, as Leonard wrote them. It reminds me of the great quote of Perla Batalla about doing Famous Blue Raincoat, when it's already been done so many times, when she likened Leonard's songs to the works of Beethoven :D . They leave room for many, many interpretations and renditions ~ and so great that the desire to do so will never be lacking!

I've not been able to hear this program in its entirety, yet ~ but have really been enjoying what I've been hearing so far! Wish a recording of it were available :? !

I agree. The emotion conveyed in Madeleine Peyroux's interpretation is surprisingly different, somewhat playfull. My surprise may be due to the fact that I am discovering Madeleine Peyroux with this song. I don't know where I was over the last 8 years... I'd say that between the two I prefer Kate Gibson who gave the song a more lascivious and warm tone.

Yes, unfortunately, I still can't tell you what Madeleine's been doing for the last 8 years. I had to work outside most of the day yesterday, and had [by accident] my radio tuned to the other, access station for NPR. I can, however, tell you what I did on Saturday  ! Yes, "somewhat playful" is a good description. I'll need to listen to Kate Gibson's rendition.

If you haven't seen it yet. I highly recommend the article from the Canadian Jewish News by Mike Regenstreif of Folk Roots/Folk Branches.

While I'm at work on a Saturday, making up for time missed this past week, I decided to try to listen to this special straight through, as I worked. So many wonderful moments in it. Jennifer Warnes just finished sing "Song of Bernadette" ~ some will remember my initial lack of enthusiasm for her album "Famous Blue Raincoat" ~ her voice just "too light" somehow, etc. I know I'm not alone in acquired tastes and growing appreciations. I have since come to like this album very much and to disbelieve my initial reaction to it. I guess, perhaps, it was the contrast between the literal depth of Leonard's voice and Jennifer's. What I might call the 'fragility' in her voice and its poignancy with the words, as she sang this song named after her, are what gave me head-to-toe, whole-body chills throughout it. Afterward, "Hallelujah" by Leonard immediately followed. What a celebration. Earlier, Jennifer sang "Ballad of the Runaway Horse" ["Ballad of the Absent Mare"], with her incredible, low-voiced expression in her semi-speaking phrasings. This is such a wonderful program on Leonard. If you haven't listened to it yet, please make it a point to do so. You'll be glad you did.
