Insecurity
The seagull called with a wail,
The paved lot beneath its feet,
The gray of its wings fluttering.
Three black birds
Descended from the trees,
Encircled and formed a perimeter.
Seizing an opportunity,
Wailing and squawking,
The gull took flight
And maneuvered in a circle
As the black birds pursued
Narrowly from behind.
Sat perched atop a lamppost
The gull was again in the midst of
Black birds on each subsequent pole.
I know what it’s like to be alone.
