Your Love


Your love was reckless and misguided, often inspired

by a lack of dignity and an unwillingness to be alone.

Prone to momentary infatuations, you eagerly retired

any sense of proportion you’ve exercised or known.

You coveted appearances and rarely looked away from

that marvelous image that seared the fabric of your heart.

Crippled by a devotion that left me broken and numb,

you mocked my sincerity ruthlessly from the very start.


Your love was fleeting and fragile, murderous to a degree

that was hard for my mind to accept, honor, and understand.

I was lacking any sense of self and have been unable to free

myself from debts incurred by far too many manic demands.

I cannot comprehend how we found each other in the wastes

of a land where love itself is under assault and impaired.

I remember the curves of your body, and its decadent tastes

that found my lips more than willing but so unprepared.


Your love, it observes my trail, and infiltrates my thoughts,

leaving me baffled and lost on a highway I do not know.

I am afraid of my nature and the comfort it has often sought

in the arms of half-mad women imbued with a fading glow.

I ask that you know this one thing and trust in its truth

though that I do not trust myself to know you as I should.

I will sing to that image of incandescent, sparkling youth

when we loved one another and our motives were good.
