The first Hallelujah?

Post by Kush »

There have been many covers of Hallelujah, the most recent notable ones being by Susan Boyle and Neil Diamond. According to this excellent site the very first Hallelujah cover was by Bob Dylan in 1988 along with a Finnish version also from that year. (please correct me if I am wrong in this assumption)

love it or hate it, it is clear to me this version is like no other.

Dylan performed this song two times in Montreal, Canada (08-Jul-88) and Los Angeles, CA, USA (04-Aug-88).
What sad religions they want us to believe.

And here is a blog with audio of both those performances. Dylan's not going to knock Lang or Buckley or Wainwright off their perches, but he certainly sings it with passion.

I think the "Hallelujah" cover before Bob Dylan's is Polish version by Maciej Zembaty (album Ballady Leonarda Cohena - "Alleluja", Pronit M-0022, 1985)
