John Cale talks about Leonard Cohen and recording Hallelujah

Post by neo »

At the end of this podcast John Cale talks about Cohen and recording Hallelujah.
An hour with John Cale

The legendary John Cale is in town for the Melbourne Festival - performing his album Paris 1919 live with the Victorian Orchestra and is headlining the closing night Seven Songs to Leave Behind.
Brian Nankervis and Jon Faine enjoyed an hour's conversation with him covering everything from the Velvet Underground era to his contemporary creative style and everything in between.

Thanks Neo - a little anecdote about Leonard in Israel in the 6-day war - driving around in the dessert with a speaker on the back of a jeep. :D

With reference to Seven Songs To Leave Behind, as a Melburnian, I’m so disappointed and frustrated I missed this! I only just discovered it by reading this thread – nobody had flagged the LC content of this performance (and the whole thing went under my radar)! :(

Anyway, below are the links to the relevant web-site pages for the performance and which, yet again, highlights for me Leonard’s recognition in song-writing terms!

Oh well, I’ll just have to read such programs more carefully!

Cheers,
Andrew :)

I'm sorry you missed this performance Andrew and I hope they will rebroadcast it.
It would be very interesting to listen to these cover versions.

It seems that one of the interviewers was at most impressed by the catwheels of the Cohen show he's been to...

I thought I would put this picture here - seems like it belongs - something referenced in the interview.
