Digress all you want, when it comes to Amelie, LIB [well, even if it didn't have to do with Amelie  ].....however, I loved the movie so much, I immediately returned to buy the one I'd rented, plus two more copies for gifts. I was just telling a woman friend about it on Sunday....that she really must see it.

Oh yes, and Life Is Beautiful won an Academy Award, too ~ did you see him [whose name I can't say at the moment] climb joyously over the seats [rather than take the aisle]? Right in keeping with the theme of the moving. Reframing mobility, as he reframed the Holocaust experience for his young son. I loved both movies very much.

For me, subtitles somehow add to a movie, rather than detract.

Yea, I remember that...he (Roberto Benigni) was inspiring at the Academy Awards!

I definately agree with you about the subtitles. Have you ever seen Run Lola, Run? I think you might like it if you liked Amelie.

Life is Beautiful... I believed that after seeing the film.

Liz- Have you seen Spellbound yet?

Bleed- I've seen Run Lola Run, a while ago. I remember it being damn good.

:( Unfortunately, no, on both movie titles ~ however, both are now written down. Based on what triggered your thoughts of them, and your opinions of aforesaid ones, I won't hesitate to rent and enjoy them both. Thanks for the leads 8) , LIB and Ep :D !

Exactly ~ "inspiring" the movie, showing so well how we can all benefit by reframing [at least some of] the negative aspects of our lives. "Inspiring" Roberto Benigni [thank you :D !], his spontaneous self at the awards. I cried joyful tears [that Mr. Ed would've loved  ] just seeing him ascend the stage :D . Absoutely natural and wonderful. A moving moment that brought back all that the film had encapsulated.

Hey Liz- The films mentioned before did not really trigger my talk of Spellbound. It was a previous thread where we talked of spelling and lack- there-of. But I figured since movies were on the butchers block... :)

Can I also recommend something for those of you who appreciate thoughtful films with subtitles ? "Spirited Away" - a Japanese animation, Yes , it's a cartoon, but nothing like the usual ones that Disney used to make.

Hi Ep ~

Ah, right! How could I have missed that  ? However, I've not had time for any movies, of late....still trying to make good on my promises to people for burning and mailing CDs [a long time comin' some of 'em  ].

Hi Margaret ~ "Spirited Away" is now on my list, too [thanks :D ] ~ it sounds like it warrants the 'upgraded' term of "animation" ~ makes it much more palatable to adults  .

Not seen that one Margaret but Iv'e taken note. On the film Amelie I confess I had not heard of it but by stange coincidence a film mentioned in my daily paper the other day was one called He loves me, he loves me not starring Audrey Tautou star of Amelie, I tried to get hold of Amelie today but without success, so tonight I had to make do with a Jack Nicholson film called About Schmit, not a brilliant film but it had something. I also got hold of Under milkwood starring Richard Burton which I have never seen which coming from where I do I should be ashamed  in mitigation I do have a spoken word copy of it on vinyl with Dylan Thomas and an American cast.

one more addition...
Roberto Benigni is one of the three leads (along with Tom Waits and John Lurie) in probably my favorite movie of all-time -- 'Down by Law'. It's a truly beautiful and funny film by Jim Jarmusch. I recommend!

I loved Down By Law, too.. wonderful film. As is Amelie, of course. In fact, I watched that one again last evening, to balance the visceral reaction I experienced from going to see Farenheit 9/11 in the afternoon. Anyway, can't wait to see Roberto and Tom in their new movie.. Coffee and Cigarettes.

Thank you Midnight, was a great read. I gave to some friends the adress of that site, great! I wonder if comrade Moore is reading sometimes, he should, but then again, it would not help
