106.5 Sydney/101.1 Melbourne Mix FM - 9/3/23 (09)

I write to you now
Near death of the Dow
The waxing of moon
Adverbial ‘soon’
Things going down
No king and no crown
Greed’s mercy call
Zimbabwe bankroll
‘Imagine’ on radio
I lost us on video
Your painting of Man
Inscribed in my plan
They say I am crazy
A dreamer but lazy
Remember we danced
My Taft and white pants
Remember I was
So vague just because
I had this big dream
Ignored courtship scene
Played Russian roulette
With you and the pets
And I made you cry
Six times did I lie
Deception at night
No honour in sight
A broken down hero
Testosterone ego
I then flew away
Of course you would stray
Me a damn fool
So awkwardly cruel
I can’t take it back
But listen dear Jack
I talk to your pride
Your fair enough side
So much is at stake
In Love’s mighty ache
A place there in History
A ripe God of mystery
A quaint home in Hurstbridge
The death of mad sacrilege
We’ll do it together
In all sorts of weather
Let’s challenge convention
Create no pretension
I summon the courage
We’ll find it in marriage
My promise is true
I so much love you

You think guilt
is nondescript
That repenting
is for wimps -
not for ‘real’
Aussie men
That your day
of perm
manicure
and tizz
cures apathy
That your
Ford Laser
push-up bra
and Mr Sheen
know decency
That ‘Johnny B.
Goode’ is
more than
rock’n’roll
That at the heart
of your precious
truisms -
love, fidelity
and bravery -
is honour
That your blue
and white bikini
hippy dress
and Sterling Reds
ward off
insignificance
and loneliness

You believe in
Brighton home
Fawkner Club
Cabaret
That men who
betray you
must disappear
forever
That happiness
is reserved
for the rich
and the greedy
That I never
meet you
in prose
or poem
or dream
That truth is
enclosed in
career and
privilege
That I would never
amount to much
That I was only
some reject
That now
there’s no need
for us to pen
considered
wedding vows

But sometimes
you are wrong

Yes - nervously - they were.

You know when you get that indecisive, unsure
feeling. When you're not really sure of what you're
doing, but something says, "Do it, anyway." This is
where I'm at revealing these poems.

Thanks for the interest, Cate

That's very cool Adam.

I know exactly that feeling that your talking about - it feels great when you push through though doesn't it.
Both of these poems are emotionally charged - powerful choices to be read. I wonder (but not actually asking) if she heard them.

Hi Cate,

I am not sure if she heard them on the night,
but I think she knows they were read. By re-
producing them here, I'm giving Jackie the
chance of seeing exactly what went down.
This was read on May 14, 13,700,000,022 (2008)

I said I’d go live
In that town Tel Aviv
It’s here I’d forget your sweet smile
I thought I’d eat bagels
Chopped liver with ladles
And marry a local for a while

But I am stuck here
In your memory, dear
Of those days making love in a park
Me king of Emerald
You my chief general
We had courage, and dreams; wonderstruck

We endure this hiatus
Like we’re bogged in Clematis
Where we sang to the rhythm and blues
We’re coming together
As sure as the weather
No more breaking like Kidman and Cruise

The sun he does rise
Another night dies
Remember that kiss at Kilkenny?
But behind your back
With others I shacked
I am so sorry baby, for the many

You’ve got to admit
So it seems where I sit
We were made for each other in heaven
Get over the pain
Let’s catch the last train
Or a thundering 767

There’s work to be done
Without you I am glum
Be my bride, most of all be my friend
Fifteen years is slow goin’
So I wrote down this poem
And you know in our hearts we don’t end

Hi Adam ~

Jackie, your Jackie. I've never felt [as some might view this] that your longing relates to the challenge of "the one that got away." Instead, I've always felt that your story of Jackie was one regarding your youth and stupidity. The decisions we make then are not always well grounded. Pride so often goes before the fall. Your relationship did, but, more importantly, so did you... you fell in love and have never forgotten. If I had the money and could, I'd fly to Tel Aviv or wherever you and Jackie chose, if one day you really will marry. If you choose to have guests, please at least send me an invitation. I know... I mean really know... how much that day will mean to you. Your final four lines are heart melting, and especially the first and last lines of them.
Be my bride, most of all be my friend
Fifteen years is slow goin’
So I wrote down this poem
And you know in our hearts we don’t end

I've loved reading your poems in this thread.
May fate be kind to you both; may you one day sit together and write your marriage vows.

I thank you, Lizzy - very much.

On Monday the 4th of February, 13,700,000,022 (2008) I emailed this poem
to Mix FM. That night the DJ who runs, ‘Love Songs and Dedications’, read
it out.

106.5 Sydney/101.1 Melbourne Mix FM – 4/2/22

Love doesn’t die
like an old car,
a flower, a style.
It is fashioned
by a sculptor
beyond thought.
Eternity lives here.
As does
bitter memory
euphoria and guilt.
You are integral
to it all – as I am.

I left the scene.
Then you did.
We tasted deception.
I danced around
other women
in early 20’s ego,
in gutless alcohol.
We were young -
imprisoned by pain.
We made love
so defiantly
up against the hate.

Tonight I am alone -
without you, still.
I hear the
sculptor’s chisel
refining, defining.
It carves out your name
your cheekiness
your presence.
And we meet
once again
darling Jackie -
incomplete
holding hands

Apart from the four poems noted above, I went on the programme three other times.

Peace,
Boss

Dear Jackie,

We spent 5 bumpy years together. Then, 18 years ago this Friday, I left you at the Melbourne Airport. Wide-eyed, I flew to Israel. You returned to our rented home in Eltham, to our dog and cat. On the way to Bangkok, my first stopover, I couldn’t help but think of how empty our last kiss was. I assume your pride believed we were over. You were wrong. Since that time in 1992, apart from an interlude in the mid-90s, I have waited and waited and waited for you. But my waiting days are coming to an end. I have to leave Australia soon. I’ve decided to stick it out until the end of summer. In essence, you have 4 months.

18 years is a damn long time. So many nights apart, so many different moments. You must have changed. Even so, I’m sure your gutsy, adventurous soul is still intact. I never told you how much I cherished your love, your friendship, your cheekiness. I never told you a lot of things. Neither did you. Since we split, I have existed modestly. I had no choice. But in my loneliness, I grew. I believe I am a better person than the one you knew, the one you so deeply fell in love with. Jackie, I’m offering you the world. Just take my hand. C’mon, I dare you. Take a risk. This Universe of ours is magnificent. It shimmers, it dances, it has no limits. Sometimes dreams come true, honey. If you just believe, sometimes they really do. You’ve got 4 months.

I love you eternally,
Adam

Ps. if you’re interested, you might find me somewhere down Brunswick St., Fitzroy exploring a warm summer night.
