That night there was nearly a riot.

Helicopters flew low over the city
while cop cars burned. Coffee shops
and sex stores alike locked their doors.
Clouds smothered the strawberry moon
and rain filled our streets. We hid,
snug under an awning.

Men in black darted into dark openings,
with a nod and a smile.
Yellow sharks peddled by on bikes,
while queens cheered them on.
We nestled closer
safe in our shadowy corner

until one catches your scent.
He stops to shine his many teeth at you.
Teeth that say, come swim with us.
Little black eyes that say he'd like to share
the joy of torn flesh.

Their legs layered
between white sheets
femme fetales
fallen asleep
after a night of interrogations
and one to many
vodka martinis
