Dance me to the end of Love

Post by lightasabreeze »

Whoops, maybe in the wrong place. On BBC Radio London, midnight last night, Jo Good played 'Dance me to the End of Love' sung by Madeleine Peyroux.
Different, but I rather liked it. (I since found it on You Tube) I was waiting for Jo to credit Leonard for the song, but she did not. Pity. She should have done.

I loved this version the first time I heard it, and since then have listened to alot of Madeleine Peyroux's work. A very fine singer!

I agree, it would have been nice for Jo to credit leonard.

Just for info, Madeleine Peyroux has covered a few LC songs, including Dance Me To The End Of Love. Also Blue Alert and Half the Perfect World.(written by Leonard and Anjani) (Half the Perfect World is also name of one of Madeleine Peyroux's albums).
In the notes on this album she writes "Dedicated to the crazy thinkers, my teachers:
Larry Klein, Leonard Cohen and Anjani Thomas........."

We saw her last year in concert in Birmingham where she walked on stage and the first words she spoke were:
"This is a Leonard Cohen song!" She then played a very good version of of "Dance Me To The End Of Love". As a LC fan this, of course, was the highlight of the night for me, however the rest of the show was also excellent. I recommend further listening to a very talented lady.
Hope this is of interest to you.

Regards

Scott

For me "Dance me to end of Love" and "Hallelujah" are almost Public Domain, that's why performers don't credit LC often. (:-)

madeleine peyroux

madeleine sings on bbc `woman's hour` - her performance should be chapter-segmented at site later today.

Madeleine Peyroux has received critical acclaim for a voice that echoes and reinterprets jazz and blues greats like Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith. Her singing has been likened to a worn out angel. The former winner of the Best International Jazz Artist at the BBC Jazz Awards, she has just released her fifth solo album, in which she broadens her musical palette to embrace an organic, American roots sound. She joins Jane to discuss her musical career and to perform the track “Don’t Pick a Fight With a Poet” from her new album “Standing on a Rooftop”, live in the studio.

“Standing on a Rooftop”is available on the(Emarcy/Decca),label
