from the baskets filled with your smiles
to the gutters filled with your tears
in the eyes of all those who have loved you
to the faces of all your fears
from the glances and food that you’ve stolen
to the pennies you gave to the poor
from the lovers you’ve swept under pillows
and the guilty you’ve placed on my floor
these answers are never easy, love
it’s a smaller peace from a longer war
so I’ll just stretch my thoughts all around you
