This is an old song of mine that I did a quick recording of on my digital recorder (live & uncut, so far from perfect). I thought you Leonard folks might enjoy this. It's not about Leonard, but probably influenced by him. I hope you guys don't mind me sharing these over here.
This song evolved from an episode of Antiques Roadshow I was watching one evening. They featured a puppet museum in whatever city they were broadcasting from. One of the puppet shows demonstrated was a magician and his assistant. Something about the image of the magician's assistant disappearing inside her box inspired me, so I spent some time researching magician's assistants and decided it would be interesting if I could turn this idea into a "bad relationship" song somehow.
The "mismaid" line is a reference to a classic illusion, called Mismade Girl. I wanted to incorporate at least one well-known illusion somewhere in the lyric. Also, in the trade (so to speak) magician's assistants are known as "box jumpers." They pull-off the illusion. The magician really does not do much when they are performing but twirl things around, wave his cape, etc. They have to be pretty athletic.
Girl in the Box

I am the girl
In sequins and pearls
I've lived my
Whole life as your prop
With a sleight of hand
I'm at your command
I am the girl
In the box
That's how things go
In this magic show
I never know what you'll pick
And it's hard to see
Which victim I'll be
Until we perform the trick
So I'll step inside
And go for my ride
And fold myself up in knots
Then you saw me half
While I try not to laugh
I am the girl
In the box
(Chorus/Bridge)
I spin on the wheel
As you throw your steel
And the colors pass by in a swirl
And if you're remiss
And you happen to miss
Will you find
Some other girl?
When I'm in this chest
I cannot rest
Because things are not what they seem
Your magic's too strong
But I play along
All the while I scream
I am the girl
Who tumbles and twirls
Never escaping your locks
My life is Mismade
I live in my grave
I am the girl
In the box

I liked this. I couldn't help singing Alice in Chains "Man in the Box" when reading it- but it was interesting to hear the story from a female perspective, I like how you used the parallel to magic, that was creative. I enjoyed it.
