To The Bearer of the Famous Blue Raincoat

He captured the soul of a generation
Or two.
Encapsulated within words and music
Our dreams.
A poet that suffered not
Of material need.
A restless soul whose spirit rebelled
Against himself.

A man who could capture beauty
And grief.
A man who could package grief
In beauty.
A man who never failed to stir
My imagination.
A man who wrote of life,
And love-
A man who wrote of strife,
And loss-
Mostly of his making.

A man who sought the answer
And the question
A man who made me cry,
With joy.
A restless spirit that always oppugns,
His being, our world.
An irreligious man,
A rabbi and a priest.
A religious layman,
An agnostic.

A man raised in bigotry
Who taught us tolerance.
A spirit that would not,
Could not,
Should not,
Will not,
Be calmed.

Retrospective requiems

Are the songs of the day.

Like the Hydra-

Many heady thoughts

Many hedonistic deeds.

His songs, his poems,

The mirror of his life.

Dear Blewgenes ~

I love it when people like you are able to beautifully put into words how Leonard's music and words have affected them. You speak for me, with your words and phrases, and I appreciate it. For the most part, I'm able to succeed in expressing myself in writing. Afterward, I can sit back and say, "Yes. That's what I think; that's how I feel." However, doing that with regard to Leonard's impact has always eluded me. Something goes beyond words, and I just can't seem to get there.

With gratitude,
Elizabeth
