Post-Mortem Bar



I now pronounce a judgement over those friendships I have shared

with ghosts long dead who shared in my abuse.

I admit there was much I did that was all together unprepared,

impossible to accept, my behavior without excuse.

You appear to me now shrouded by the cloud of hysterical times

when I aspired to silence yet was expected to go so far.

You speak to me in magical proverbs and long forgotten rhymes

like the whispers of promises heard in a post-mortem bar.


You would be the lesser ghosts of a another man’s days,

but I most certainly claim you as one of my own.

You have tortured me with your regrets and the unspeakable ways

you mastered to assure that I have remained alone.

I cannot promise that I am able to love you anymore,

you crippled me as I reached for that lofty, imperial star.

So much is ruined around us that I feel compelled to restore;

I will greet you with a sigh in that post-mortem bar.


Do you remember when the dance of ages seemed timed in our favor?

Do you remember when the lights of ambition seemed to touch our souls?

I doubt you do now, and if I find that I once again meet you later

I will not forget those instances when you exercised complete control.

I now pronounce a judgement over those friendships I have shared,

those hallucinatory years I spent spreading my heart out too far.

I condemn you for every transgression, every way of escape you

prepared,

leaving me alone in this post-mortem bar.

I always look forward to your endings; not for your pieces or your poetry to end, but rather the inevitable twist or punch that they end with....a post-mortem bar ~ what a novel concept, and it's great what you've done with it.
