Give us this day

Post by Violet »

Give us this day

Give us this day
everything
everything the wounded saw
those dark days when havoc
drove them to surrender

Give us this day
everything
everything those mothers clung to
when war was at hand; when the land
grew barren
when all hope left the skies

Give us this day
everything
everything that’s in my heart
and mind
now that war is again at hand

everything
everything that’s begun
from everything that was
all the absurdity
in everything that’s great
and arrogant
and failing

Give us this day
our daily bread
the wounded never of it
tasted

Give us this day
our daily bread
those few
who always come to
take it (who always come
to say they’ve
made it)

take us this day
from the darkest of skies
take us this day
that small ring of light

take us
that crown
that deity
that savior

Wow V - thanks for sharing this.

I have spent a lot of time in the past over The Lord's Prayer, I really like this poem
It has hard for me to choose a favourite bit, because you can't have one part of it without all of the rest...
But I very much felt this -
everything
everything that’s begun
from everything that was
all the absurdity
in everything that’s great
and arrogant
and failing
Thankyou x

Best Wishes

A

.. thanks A.. I wrote this quite some time ago, but it somehow fit the mood I've been in.. I wonder at its ending, though.. I think we look to some God-like saving grace, when all seems rather lost and hopeless.. but my mind resists this too.. not in its entirety, as I feel there is a kind of "sacredness" afoot, if only we were so disposed to in some way "know" it.. but.. I do think we were given minds for a reason.. that we might use them to strengthen, to fashion even, some vital understanding, without which we are lost..

.. I think we've all seen this manner of intelligence, at times.. a brave intelligence, maybe.. wed to "right action".. (Gandhi comes to mind)..

.. anyway.. I just thought I'd point to where my mind goes as regards the ending of this poem.. I'd like it to suggest something more complex than just "surrender".. though I believe it might not be up to it..
