Great poem Pete !!
The essence of a good poem is when it paints a picture in the readers mind and for some reason in this one I can see Ken in his long Johns and thermal vest sat in a bandstand in Scarborough listening to Grimethorpe collery band playing " Ferry cross the Mersey " . I need to see a doctor !!

The photogragh of O'Neils made me think after Germany it has to be Dublin !! We could have a weekend walking from pub to pub but then we really would have a mountain to climb !

i’m muchly honoured to be mentioned in one of your excellent poems….i shall print it out for you to recite when next we meet.....putting aside all humour my feet haven’t been warm since november 17th 2009….when will this dreadful winter ever end…..it's all right for that diane lady she has still got warm red blood circulating through her veins.....

......i think my hatred of snow is well documented but I’m not sure if those folk who love the dreadful stuff know the true nature of it………
............in ancient greece snow was considered to be the sperm of the god of snow and frost glacius who was the son of poseidon and demeter….
.........in northern parts of greece it was known that whenever the snow started to fall married ladies who were unable to have children climbed up the nearest mountain and lay down naked in the snow with their legs wide apart in the hope that some of glacius’ sperm/snow would fall into their whatsit and hopefully make them pregnant….so next time you are all frollicking and rolling about in the stuff please remember what it is you are playing in……
..........it didn’t actually snow while I was over in yorkshire so I don’t know if the custom ever caught on with the yorkshire lasses….. ta ken

....and if she became pregnant then, nine months later, she would give birth to a snowbaby.......... and the husband would accuse her of being unfaithful and the townsfolk would march her up the mountain and snowball her......

I have talked to Jean about this so called custom and she assures me she has never climbed to the top of a mountain in the snow with the intention of getting pregnant ! The long grass in the summer was always the preferred option !

We've heard of coitus interuptus, but surely glacius interutus would mean only once every ten thousand years ? Would that be only one emergency braking procedure every ten thousand years, or you could only avoid just one glacius interuptus every ten thousand years ? That could mean some people having a headache for hundreds of years......

phil....glad to hear that jean never did the snow thing on the mountains....but then again there are no mountains in south yorkshire.....you snow lovers may mock but can you honestly tell me with hand on heart that you find the photo (below) of the road between whitby and scarborough 'pretty'?...this is the kind of scene that would fill any sensible person such as me with dread............

....as one old fella on the quayside in whitby said 'we have more snow 'ere in yarkshire tha they 'ave in tha there canada place..they should have the next winter games down tha in Robin 'ood's Bay'........and bugger me i'm off to zagreb next week and the forecast there is for snow tomorrow and for the next few days....so john you had better warn margaret to pack some heavy winter clothes and a couple of hip flasks............ ta ken

Ah com'on Ken, it is not that bad. My son lives in Minnesota and today was a good day, only -8 degrees. It is usually between -15 and -25 for most of the winter.
So, it is just a little bit of pretty snow that we folks get on this side of the Atlantic.

i can't see him...all i can is a six foot high pile winter clothes.......have you ever listened to Garrison Keillor talking about the minnesota winters on his radio show...hilarious.....i've only ever feared two things in my life ...clowns and snow...and believe it or not but both conditions/phobias have proper medical names...the fear of snow is known as chionophobia and the fear of clowns is known as coulophobia and i currently take medication for both conditions.....a while back someone out of sheer malice sent me this link for me to construct my very own clown.........

Well Ken you should thank yourself lucky you only have two . I have three ! I am a somniphobic with aeroacraphobia and potophobia which is why I am on the computer at this ungodly hour bemoaning the fact that it took me months to get over the trip to Barmouth

he looks a fine figure of a lad...definitely not the type to let a little bit of snow upset him........you will be pleased to know that i travelled over to my hometown of manchester today to pay homage to a member the irish royal family....none other than niamh cusack herself....i think i must have seen all the cusacks on stage by now (a far more attractive royal family than the british royal family) she was in Sebastian Barry's (another old dub) play about hans christian anderson and charles dickens 'andersen's english' and absolutley marvellous she was to...if you know your folk music you may have heard of the songwriter thomas moore (yet another old dub) born way back in the 1700s....the cast sang a few of his songs during the course of the play such as 'the last rose of summer', and 'oft in the stilly night' to name but two.......lovely lovely stuff...tomorrow night i turn to the welsh for my entertainment......hugh hughes the welsh actor/comedian or comedian/actor i never know how to describe him has his latest one-man show on at the liverpool everyman theatre....i couldn't help notice on the show's flyer the lines on..........

Has your camera got some kind of fault on it because it seems to me that it always runs out of colour on the last shot !
Great idea about the quiz teams by the way I will be giving some thought as to who should be with who and what they should be called . For instance all those who stayed in the Sandpiper could be in one team and be called The Eggheads ! But only if they declare that name the night before the quiz !
