I read your longer poem this morning when i had no time to answer. My initial reaction was that is was brutally honest...that "stuff" is not held accountable for all the grief it causes for the most part.

What i wanted to know after reading through your poem was Why 3rd Grade? Seemed like a middle school/high school field trip to me :?

Now that you have edited so heavily, feel free to just not answer if you'd rather not. I understand.

cheers,
Laurie

Hey Laurie- I felt that I should edit because two friends of mine that visit the forum (but do not post) sent me email saying that the content of the piece, to some, could very offensive and not appropriate for a collective such as this...
I did not agree but at the same time do not wish to offend anyone here.
I chose the third grade because stereotypes and intolerance are taught and learned at a young age, although not the main focus.
I am aware that this piece was viewed a few times before said edit and if anybody was offended I apologize. This was not my intention...

Hi Epurcelly ~

The only thing that I questioned to myself [and that seemed offensive] was the use of stereotypes [the Irish, the Blacks, etc.] ....do you break stereotypes by using them? That aspect threw me a bit, but like Laurie, I was very busy and wasn't sure how best or to what length to respond [you've certainly made that easier  ]. Otherwise, it seems ["in this day and age"] that the 3rd grade is about the right time to start addressing alcohol head-on], and I liked it from that aspect. By middle school/high school, it's already too late. Or, wasn't alcohol usage the real point of it, since you've cited "stereotypes and intolerance?"

Ep~

I was not offended.

Strangely(?) because the speaker was 'diseased' which i surmised was alcoholism, the absence of the usual politically correct filter seemed fitting. It wasn't a barb against races or types...rather pebbles of truth from the mouth of an out of control being.

Like i said before brutally honest.

But, i can see that some could take offense. I admire your sensitivity in taking a step to prevent any ill will, once the potential was brought your attention.

Keep writing.
Laurie
