To celebrate...NO scratch that....To honor my av....no wait...An Ode To An Avat...shit, that's not it~~Really, i'm posting this poem i wrote a few years back cuz my avatar is a rose...and close in mug shot splendor to my wild rugosas.....
WILD ROSE PETALS
Cupping my fingertips
over their perfumed skins,
I pluck them
From smooth, green cups
Dropping them
Soft, Pink
Feather-like
into the wicker basket at my feet.
Bending down,
I see a petal,
Blushing, lively Pink
Impaled
On it's own young, green thorns.
Leaving it there,
I retrieve my basket
and head home.

Wild Rose Petals
WoW.
Perfect.
No words wasted, no words extra.
Beautifully-varied, visually-pleasing line lengths.
Line lengths visually recreating the pathway of rose petals gently falling.
The dramatic contrast of
". . . a petal,
Blushing, lively Pink"
with the almost barbaric
"Impaled. . . "
The surprizes of "On it's own young, green thorns."
and
"Leaving it there,"
I like the "young, green thorns," too ~ if thorns can be considered to have a delicacy, those do, and "young, green" brings that reminder.
The gentle, meditative, passive and zenlike "in the moment" focus of the visual of watching the petals being plucked and falling ~ in contrast with the action ending,
"I retrieve my basket
and head home."
Such a gentle "be here now" in one rose's life. Or, shall we make that two
?
Beautiful.
I guess it's too long for a signature, though, huh
. Oh well, at least the avatar will be a reminder of the poem. So many things I like about it.

WoW.
You got this right on.
I was an experiment in minimalism and an attempt to create snap shots for the reader.
The line endings were very important.
And the 'young green thorns' were almost just 'thorns.' But i saw when changing it, it brightened the snap shot i saw, as opposed to a darker stem and thorns....such minute detail, but important nevertheless.
Glad you liked it and give yourself kudos, or have a drink to forget! that you really hit the nail on reading this one.
p.s. get an av!

Yowza.
I am not complex enough nor a good enough writer to bend my metaphors with as much distance from the obvious that you got from this.
Very interesting really, that you saw what you did.

Yes. This is totally true. But what i was going for was the reader's interpretation of exactly how their 'memory' rose looked...how their 'basket' looked, etc. And the tactile image of grabbing those soft, pink, fragrant petals that float down into the basket. But I think that because of the thoughtful simplicity, the reader will be able to draw any line he/she wishes.

I'm so glad
. Minimalism in words, yet detailed visually. Your experiment worked
.
Yes, exactly. As I read the "young, green. . ." ~ I also envisioned the contrast between those and the older, thicker, tough, brown ones. The "young, green" also added a measure of delicacy to the rose and its petals, as it wasn't simply a pink rose, but a youthful one, as well. Minimalistically [who knows how that is to be spelt
], you accomplished two things concurrently.
My drink should have a pink, rose petal floating on top, but still I won't forget
.
Avatar ~ I remember someone providing a link where there were some [many?] to choose from. Maybe it's my Piscean Sun [two fish swimming opposite directions ~ horizontally] with Gemini Moon [a scale with its two ends measuring in opposite directions ~ vertically], and Taurus Rising [just trying to 'ground' the bunch
] that makes the issue of 'choice' so difficult
. So many possibilities.....so difficult to choose. I never even visited the site, the thought of it just too overwhelming
. Plus, Linmag already got the one I think I maybe would've chosen [see there!...". . .I think I maybe. . ."]. Perhaps, a lovely, black cat ....okay, feline.... [absent a bow tie] is there, just waiting to be taken home.

Surprisingly (to me) it was not a piece of cake to even find an 'avatar' site.
A search through yahoo found me this
http://members.adelrose.com/romanys/frames/
There are not an overwhelming amount of pics to chose from. The 'adelrose' in the link does not imply it is a flower-intensive site. Just coincidence.
If you check it out, don't forget to look at the "misc" category. There is a spiffy turquoise swirl thingy you might like, could be abstract piscean.
The technical aspect of this was thankfully easy. You 'right click' to save a picture and it automatically puts it on your computer as a .gif file. When you go to your Profile to insert it, the Browse button took me right to those pics i had saved. Simplice!
toodles,
Laurie p.s. Feeling the nudge?!?
