At intermission, Bono declared that he wanted to go backstage and shake hand with Leonard. He went, asked for and was answered with a polite but firm "NO". Maybe this the true reason of Bono's tears.
That's not surprising considering LC still had a show to do and likely wanted to limit any distractions.I am pretty sure if Bono wanted to meet LC in most situations[not the intermission of a concert]he would be welcomed.

I'm still p.o.'ed over Bono's response to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. When asked if U2 would perform at the first Jazz Festival after The Storm, to encourage eonomic survival of the city, Bono nixed it. Not enough money or exposure, he very famously responded. Some of his band members, notably "The Edge" (!!) did turn up anyway, asking no remuneration whatsoever, incognito and not even announcing who they were. They just joined other musicians on the stage and jammed. ( I was a bit tipsy from sun and beer, and had to turn to a bystander and ask, Hey, isn't that guy somebody famous? And the Festmate responded, Yeah, that's The Edge. And I'm like, The Who? And he's like, Not the Who, the Edge. You know, from U2. And I'm like, Oh yeah, right.) One of the highlights of the Festival was when Mr. Edge joined the locally famous Rebirth Brass Band in a medley which included "Stand By Me" and the gorgeous old Sam Cooke civil rights anthem, "A Change is Gonna Come."
But I've got no use for Mr. Bono, even though I really DID love his take on Hallelujah. His notoriously self-promotional altruism showed itself for what it really is--it's all about the money.
I'm a little tipsy right now, matterofact--painkillers after a farm accident, dislocated arm. Pardon me if I sound stupid. I do to myself. ARRRGHHH! Cheerio !

I used to defend Bono when he was criticised over his humanitarian efforts, but no more. He criticised Bush in a fairly recent UK chat show - it was low class, especially when his role should make him neutral. He just sounds like Obama now

Would you care to show me the link where I can see where Bono said "Not enough money or exposure', he very famously responded Thats not normal for Bono. The Edge has shown a love for New Orleans since the early 90's.

I for one see nothing wrong with "anyone" talking down Bush, in fact, it would be more criminal not to do so!
I guess it all started for me sometime around Christmas 1967 and now, goodness me, it's.........2018 and over fifty years later.
No one ever listens to me. I might as well be a Leonard Cohen record.

There's an old expression here in Ireland that goes like this:

'Your bladder is too near your eyes".

Methinks this applies to Bono.

In song.

Not at all but do you honestly think that Bush is beyond people being allowed to have views, other than your own?

What a dishonest response. You ignore your reference to criminality

OK, I think it is "criminal" (try not to be hung up on the word "criminal" as being used here in the normal used sense of the word and perhaps deplorable was the word I should have used) as not to be able not to speak of Bush how you want, for or against. I believe Bono is fully entitled to give his views, just as anyone else should be allowed to. If you or anyone else do not like it, too bad, then don't support (or even dislike) Bono if you feel that way.

And as for "take something for your Bush Derangement Syndrome" that really is a very stupid thing to say to someone who was merely supporting free speech for Bono.

Edit:
I really don't want to talk about politics, especially on this thread. I think he should have been able to speak his mind as he wished, you don't. I like to keep my politics private, more so on this Forum. You are wasting your time if you hoped you could turn it in to a Republican Vs Democrats slanging match. So please go argue your politics with someone who gives a monkeys.

I don't understand all the anti-Bono sentiment these past few years. Maybe he's just overexposed. He seems like a person who tries to help others around the world when he could just be sitting around enjoying his millions. And he doesn't seem to have a personal life that suggests he's an asshole. He does carry on a bit at awards shows, etc. But I think he really is an emotional person. An emotional person with a microphone : )

u2 are a great band - there's no problem there
íf Bono quietly engaged in humanitaian work that would be great .The problem is that he does this work with the maximum self agrandising self publicity.
Leonard's work resonates

I don't have a link, but I myself did very famously, at the time of Katrina and the first Jazzfest thereafter, live in New Orleans. And I remember quite clearly that the promoter of Jazzfest, whose name I've never made a point to remember, made some rather pointed comments -about Bono's refusal to appear at Jazzfest 2006. And it may have been the promoter who attributed to Bono the motivation "not enough money or exposure" but it is a fact that Bono was invited and refused. Pretty much everybody on the street at the time was talking about it, and a lot of New Orleanians were saddened and disheartened..

As for your link, about artist and U2 bandmember known as The Edge, it's just that. It's about The Edge and his unfailing support for New Orleans, and his ongoing participation in Music Cares, etc---not Bono's.

Which is pretty much what I was saying in my post.

I never said the link was about Bono, read the sentence leading to the link.

I am sure there were good reasons for him not being there, if not why has he bothered to go to New Orleans and also offer other help?
