Insincerity Blues
Insincerity Blues
Here is one for Arno (and any other guitarists) who may be interested.
This is a blues song in E. The way Eric Clapton sometimes departs from the trad. 3 chord blues has influenced how this tune was invented.
Insincerity Blues. 1998.
E Emaj7
With your words diplomatic, well crafted and timed,
E7
You tell us what we all want to hear.
A Am E (6,7,6)E
Ah- but you cannot disguise, what is said between the lines,
F#m7 B7 E, 7,6,b6,E B7.
And the message I'm getting, is not sincere.
Hearts across the ocean, signals on the air,
Messages keep coming through, but nobody there.
Sweet words of comfort, bitter words of fear,
Patronising reassurance, how much bullshit can you bear?
What can you do, what can you say?
When that line you're given is a slap in the face.
Well friendship is not inclined, when you do it that way.
Is this how you get your kicks? well I'm on my way.
Give a bit of sympathy, show an honest face,
Actions of integrity build a life of no disgrace.
Affection, humour, kindness, a way to make a bond.
No harm in getting close, feeling safe, feeling strong.
(c) J.W.
Again the forum program compresses the chords positions.
Emaj7 ^crafted. E7^tell. A^cannot. Am^what. E 676E^lines. F#m^message. B7^is. E76b6thE>B7^-cere.
Regards, WittyOwl.

Tom, yes you have that almost correct. Over the phrase "and the message" delete the B7 over the "and".
How did you get the chords to sit correctly over the corresponding words? Each time I tried by direct typing or by copy and paste the "Forum software" automatically condensed the line of chords whether I used the space bar or the tab.
Liz, I wrote this one in the late 90's with reference to the political rhetoric we are fed on the tube and also how one or two not so "sincere" friends had communicated in a similar fashion. You know the kind of people who like to play mind games and find entertainment in prodding simply for a reaction?
No one person in particular- a composite character.
Jo I recorded this song when I was preparing my first collection on CD. "Post Colonial Dreams". I was not satisfied with the recording of Insincerity Blues and I had other material that filled up the CD. I am working on the 2nd CD project and plan on making a better recording of the song to include it in this next collection. Instrumental breaks will have a bottleneck slide played over the finger style acoustic chords. Unless I transform my WAV files to MP3s for the purpose of email, it is unlikely you will hear it via the net.
Cheers, Witty Owl.

I'm so sorry for this late response, Witty Owl - I haven't been back to this site since I posted that
Thanks for the info - I also only today noticed that someone had PM'd me about this. I'm devastated that I won't hear your song on the net - is there any possibility that your CD will be available in South Africa?
Not having even the vaguest musical knowledge - I once told someone that I don't know one note from the next and he replied "...and by the time the third note comes along you've forgotten the first two" - I don't have any idea about the musical side - but your lyrics touched a very personal chord in me and I would love to hear you sing - I've heard you're very good.

Jo, the new CD project is well on the way but it may be stalled for 5 weeks as I have a teaching contract that will keep me busy 4 days a week for that period. I have recently acquired a new studio microphone (a Rhode NT3) which is extra sensitive compared to my stage mikes and will make a huge difference to recording quality. Hopefully the next CD will be available in 3-6 months from now. I have enough new and old material and ideas in the making that could fill several CDs but time is the tyrant that keeps me from the studio.
Thanks for the interest you have shown; I shall keep in touch.

Epurcelly, as this thread started out with a J.W. original song then discussion on sound equipment and instruments does not really de-rail the thread. At the risk of boring those not into the equipment details of music production I shall give you an overview of gear.
I record onto a Tascam 4 track 414 portastudio. Mixing through a Yamaha 8 channel (2 stereo, 6 mono) PA powered mixer EMX860st with digital delay. While this mixer is designed for stage work it does a fine job for studio work also. As I try to avoid track bouncing which degrades sound quality I often premix parts if I need to build more than 4 tracks per song; e.g. Drums, rhythm guitar and guide vocal on track 1 as a first take. I use Shure microphones, a 57 and a 58 and now for studio, a Rhode NT3 condenser. Two drum sequencers Boss DR670 and DR550. Keyboard, a Yamaha synthesiser SY55 with on board sequencer. Three acoustic guitars; K. Yairi st. 6 string, Ibanez 12 string and a Novaro nylon 6 string with cutaway. Three electric guitars; Seiwa Strat copy, Yamaha SE350H with double coil pickups and an Aria short length bass guitar. Electrics are played through a Crate GX65 (watt) amp. Pedals; Vestax digital delay, Boss compression sustainer, Yamaha overdrive, and Dunlop Wah. For acoustic a Fishman Pro eq Platinum preamp and Boss Chorus. I also play several didgeridus, a Yamaha flute and (rarely) a Weltklang soprano saxophone. On occassions in live performance I play guitar and didgeridu simultaneously.
Recently I have considered whether to get a digital hard drive recorder but I think prices are still too high to warrant the cost. Money would be better spent on a new computer with sound software which can perform many other functions in addition to recording. Have you ventured into the realm of digital recording or do you still prefer the analogue process?
I trust this answers your questions.
Cheers, Witty Owl.

Thanks WO- I love gear... As far as the digital realm, I have used a Roland 1880. It is a great machine, many "virtual" tracks and effects. However the effects are not free. I forget how much they cost, I think a couple of hundred. 1880 is fairly easy to operate and mixing can be done into any free computer program. Being only about 2 feet wide, this is a portable 18 track recorder. It costs about $2000 but after all is said and done you are looking at about $3100 with effects cd burner plug-in ect... My info is a couple years old they could be cheaper now. An apple g3 or g4 is nice to have along with the 1880.
I prefer analog over digital any day. The problem is the cost of analog equipment...
