songs or albums by L.C that you DON'T like?

Post by mr.midnight »

I was just wondering, are there songs or albums by Leonard Cohen that you don't like?
It's OK to admit it...many great artists have many hits and misses.
There are so many that I like and there are quite a few I don't like, but I must say the lyrics are usually great whether I like the song or not.

For me, I like about 85% of his songs from the 60's and 70's and about 10% of his songs from the 80's, 90's and 2000's.

The WHOLE album Death of a Ladies' Man.
For me, it simply doesn't exist.

Also, I don't like "The Butcher", "Leaving Green Sleeves", "The Lost Canadian", "The Traitor", "Boogie Street" and the song "Because of" murdered my world when I first heard it.

I can understand someone not liking Death of a Ladies Man, I sometimes wonder why I like it, maybe it's because I like the title track so much and 'Paper thin walls', not to mention, the so-called 'wall of sound'.

I don't care for those songs you mentioned much either, except Leaving Green Sleeves.
Other ones I can not stand are Hallelujah, Queen Victoria, Tower of Song , and I'll stumble upon a few more I don't like later on (and of course, many that I do, too).

Suzanne. I never saw the appeal of this song, either lyrically or musically,

I don`t like "Always", in my opinion it is little irritating. And for me there is a big question called Death of a Ladies Man. I think that album is more Phil Spector`s creation than Leonard`s so I try to forgive arrangements and focus on the lyrics. But DOALM is still kind of the strangest album for me.

Yeah. Especially on the 6th track..

In this album even his voice is awful. I've tried REALLY hard and MANY times to listen to all of it, but there is always a point where my nerves react badly, so I have to turn it off and listen to Songs of Leonard Cohen three or four times, 'till I calm down again.

Yep, "Don't Go Home With Your Hard-On" is maybe a little insipid but I interpret that it is caused by mid-life crisis... ;-)

I think I'm just put off by the title and that it's played out to death.

Since we're speaking of Death of a Ladies Man a bit in this topic, does anyone know if this album will be re-issued on LP? I noticed that 'Songs of' and "Love and Hate" have been.

Be For Real is interesting case for me. When Leonard sings "(Honey, I'm flexible.) Oh, yeah", he sounds just Johnny Cash. I can`t decide is it irritating or only funny. :)

I don't know what he was thinking (can we ever truly know what another is thinking?), but that song cracks me up, especially when the women start singing to the "Star Trek" theme! It think that it is wierdly and wonderfully hilarious!

Don't you all find that many of Cohen's albums have at least one song that kind of, shall I say, stands out from the rest, as being a bit of an odd-ball thing? I actually love that about his albums!

God yes, that would have to be my least favourite by far  I generally love almost all of his work, less so the 'country' songs though, so very rarely listen to Heart With No Companion, Closing Time, Tennessee Waltz etc, but oddly enough I really like The Captain, possibly because it's more of a parody. Of his 60s and 70s work I don't think there's one song I don't like. Queen Victoria's a bit odd I suppose, but it has a certain charm.
