They weren’t seeking out the willing
to satisfy salient hosts
nor the polish of a shilling
left for someone else’s ghost
not looking for a man-o-war
their pursuit was simply we
who’d fought the myth of oceans
belying passions of their sea
with purpose not to venerate
nor predict the coming wave
more conscious not to navigate
bearing fetters of a slave
with sails sodden from a friendly salt
and a cannon’s holy whore
on decks disgraced by politicians
who were rotten to the core.
