None of us are who we truly are. We are the image which we present to the world around us. We have our own image of what and who we are, but the world has a different image of who and what we are.
"If we could see ourselves as others see us......."
And yet, the world does not see the truth of who we are. The Venetians explore this theme of existence through their Masks. The Truth is hidden from others and even from ourselves. How do we attain the Truth and how do we know it, as being the Truth?
Perhaps we only come near to knowing the Truth when we have seen the evil that Man has done. To appreciate goodness, we must be aware of evil........
Truth is not a high and mighty ideal of human creation and knowledge.
Truth has long coat-tails and the threads of those coat-tails are very dirty indeed.........

Sometimes we say "I ´ve found the truth" but perhaps that truth is the one we WANT or NEED to see. An intereting philosophical subject Byron.
That thing of the masks means perhaps that truth is sometimes something hard to bare or horrible to see and must be masked........(?) is that the word?

Sandra. Yes. Truth can be a very painful fact to live with. For example, people are told every day by their doctors that they have an incurable illness. It is the Truth and the thought of it in their minds hurts as much as the illness. It is why I said that I was being serious about Truth, when I started this Thread.

One "truth" I have discovered today is:

Never eat Spaghetti while listening to a Walkman, unless it has cordless earpieces!

Byron, i was thinking of disguise, today, and here it appears. Our intrepatation of truth is based on our values. Our values (to some) ARE MORE AND MORE DISGUISED. The reality (if we can see it), is somewhat diffrent and interpolated. Therefore because we have very little perception of reality, it appears as a disguise or mask of the zorro truth.

Why did Pilate receive no answer to his question, "What is truth?"

For contemplation...

You won't find truth in religion or in philosophy or in words.

I don't know what truth is but I suspect you may find a glimmer of it by looking into the eyes of a man who watches a loved one die, knowing he will inevitably lose her...

or in the eyes of a woman who's just given birth...

or in the despair of a hungry or abused child...in the slaughter on a battlefield...

and in the almost unbearable beauty of a sunrise with birds singing and the smell of damp ground overwhelming your senses...

or the sweet sadness of a lamenting Coltrane or the drama of Beethoven.

I think truth is personal and eventually we all find our way to our very own brand of it.

Dear Jo ~

A very beautiful and eloquent description of where Truth can be found.

Jo, you have found your Truth?
If we each search for it hard enough, it will find us.

we all have the truth inside us, but it is hidden by so many rules we have received, so many teachings and in general by all the "culture" that has been given to us. we can see the truth when we despoil ourselves of all that and act as we think it is right without guilt or remorse

I keep thinking I have, Byron, and then I forget what I was looking for...but I have found something more tangible...my pirate under the bed

It took me long enough but I finally did find my one central truth - all things are possible if you believe hard enough and those that aren't you never really wanted anyway.

And the 'Jack' of hearts shall call your name......
