The Doctor Is In
This subject is of tremendous interest to me! I have written a paper to be presented to the international Organization of Analytical Freudian Scientists or OAFS in mid-January 2004. The paper is entitled, “Internet Psychosis: The Divided Ego.” Or, in layman’s terms, “Me, Myself, and I.” Since a crisis has erupted on this very forum, I will attempt to explain this psychosis for everyone’s benefit and the further understanding of this very serious and growing problem.
Multiple Forum Personality Disorder is a relatively new phenomenon. It is only as old as the Internet. Psychoanalysts are as yet undecided if it is a completely new psychosis or merely an extension of any number of older, less technologically based disorders. The Internet Analyst must be able to recognize and treat this disease with compassion and circumspection. Early detection is a must. Many times, regretably, when the patient comes to the attention of the analyst, it is far too late.
When the patient first makes an appearance on a forum, he or she is friendly, cheerful and cautious in their postings. They appear as outgoing and intelligent and are perceived by others as a welcome addition to the community. This first phase is characterized by a seeming modesty and a willingness to take turns batting the conversational ball around the board. But the Super-Ego of the patient has a neurotic need to “display” its erudition. The need is so great that the Super-Ego swells to an enormous size. At the same time, the patient will unconsciously recognize the danger inherent in this inflation. In response the Super-Ego will then divide, nay, must divide, in order to survive and continue its compulsion to “display.”
After the division, the patient will feel a genuine sense of relief. The burden of the Super-Ego is now shared by the newly formed alternate Egos. The Super-Ego does not dominate the new alternate Egos, as it no longer exists in toto…but each alternate Ego contains part of the loqui of the Super-Ego. (I disagree in the strongest terms with Dr. Friklickschtingen and his theory of the Super-Ego’s continuous and particularized existence after division!)
After the initial sense of relief, the patient will again have the compulsion to “display.” But now there are two Egos, each with their own “biography”. The two new egos compete with -- yet compliment each other. One of the Egos invariably will be more “exotic” than the other one…it usually speaks Russian. They both work together to disseminate much needed information to the forum members. But one Ego will be more dominant than the other and post more frequently. In most cases, the dominant Ego is not the “exotic” one. This dominance is determined by the differing amounts of Super-Ego that were distributed to the two new Egos during division and not by any inherent superiority on the part of the now dominant Ego.
The patient will now enter a period of acquisition and consolidation. The patient will make great strides in the effort to control and manipulate the board. Posting becomes more and more frequent. Compliments fly…instructions are given…wisdom is dispensed. In return for the vast quantities of “information” given out, the patient receives the “stroking” her Egos crave. This is a pleasant period for the patient.
Sadly this phase will end all too soon. For inevitably, the alternate Egos will begin to swell. The more dominant one will inflate more rapidly then the “exotic” one. If detection is made of the psychosis, it will be made during this phase. The swelling of the 2nd generation Egos is not a smooth process like the swelling process of the Super-Ego. For the swelling of the Super-Ego was single minded. (The Super-Ego having not yet undergone division, its swelling was an undifferentiated process…and NOT as Dr. Friklickschtingen maintains a “yet-but-not-yet” inflation!)
The 2nd generation Egos are more fragile than the original Super-Ego. When they begin to swell there is great danger of psychic “rips” or “tears” in the egotonic “fabric”. Because of these psychic “tears” the patient is more prone to mistakes in her postings. For instance, the dominant Ego may post and be immediately followed in the same thread by the “exotic” ego. Of course, they will have done this before. But the difference now is that the second post by the “exotic” Ego is merely a continuation of the post by the dominant Ego. Or the “exotic” Ego will have a decided and astonishing “improvement” in her language skills. Second generation Ego-swelling is still a great mystery but the competent analyst must be quick to spot the signs of inflation for it is always followed by a psychic breakdown.
When these curious anomalies are observed and commented on by the members of the forum’s close-knit community, the dominant Ego (in true fashion) attempts to brazen it out. This leads to desperate subterfuges about “addresses” and the differences between the “apostrophes” the “exotic” Ego and dominant Ego have posted. These gambits are as unconvincing to the general public as they are to the analyst. The Egos realize this. One of them has to go.
The dominant Ego (because of its greater swelling) will now force a “deflation” upon the weaker “exotic” Ego. In psychoanalytical literature this process is known as “leaching.” The leaching causes the “exotic” Ego to post a final goodbye to the forum. The “exotic” Ego does not disappear but after deflation lies dormant in a sort of “psychic hibernation.” (It is an absurd contention by Dr. Friklickschtingen that the “exotic” Ego “dissolves” or is “subsumed” back into the idionic substrata!) It isn’t dissolution but deflation that occurs. For it is always possible, under the right conditions, for the “exotic” Ego to conflate and stage a “psychic comeback”. Mutation is also possible.
As for the dominant Ego, the prognosis is not good. Although Internet Psychiatry has made great strides in recent years, as yet there is no known cure for MFPD. The best we can do for now is to keep the patient under close observation.

YDF - I am in awe of your diagnosis, and I note the prognosis does not look good. I have a copy of The Lancet with extracts of your paper on this very condition. I would be honoured if you would autograph it for me. I know in your field you are considered to be an expert. Is there a non-generic term for this condition?
Very interesting case. Dissociative personality disorder; delusions of adequacy as comedian/satirist (with poor timing), alternating with fantasy wish-fulfilment role-play as "'psycho' analyst". Accute projectional affects; manifest Schadenfreude; prognostically revealing choice of alter ego persona: "young Dr Freud", a rigid prig and a coke-head!

G-d dammit Albert, get off my keyboard thingie. I take a few hours to aquaint myself with the problems that avail our beloved leaders, and what do I find when I come back? Albert has taken over my PC. This is a monstrous breach of trust of somebear who I taught and thought was my friend, who has only recently begun a course in teaching torts to untaught lawyers of this fine and peasant land. If it wasn't for the medication which Albert and I share, I would have to have him ostrichzized from polite company. This is really too much, and I apologise for any hurt or discomfort which Albert has caused.
