Hi Elazar~
First, I was born there (Sydney NSW). Raised in the western plains of NSW, sheep and wheat farming country. Rode horses, mustered sheep with my father, raised some orphaned kangaroos; back to urban 'civilization', Sydney, (with my pony) when I was 10. Moved to the US in '95.
Sydney is really the best city in Oz. I've only been to Melbourne once, for a dog show. Queensland's not much till you get to Cairns, (the tropics) then it's really beautiful. The Islands off the coast are a must-see, the Great Barrier Reef etc. The commercially run islands are the best, e.g. Lindeman and Hayman. The ones run by the Queensland tourist department are not 'tourist friendly', if you get my drift, i.e. they don't give a s#**!
Hope you get a chance to see Sydney, and the Barrier Reef; you'll love it. Here's a tip: Melbournites don't like Sydney and vice versa, so don't let anyone down there tell you Sydney isn't better than Melbourne (they're just jealous, see).
Have a Violet Crumble Bar, and think of me,
