Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah Wins Musicnotes.com 2008 Song of the Year Award
MADISON, Wis.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Musicnotes, Inc., the market leader in downloadable sheet music, announced today that songwriter Leonard Cohen, and music publisher Sony/ATV Music Publishing, are the recipients of the seventh annual Musicnotes Song of the Year Award for the song, "Hallelujah."
The Musicnotes Song of the Year Award is presented each year to the songwriter and publisher of the best-selling sheet music for a song made popular in the previous calendar year. In 2008, that song was "Hallelujah.?
?Hallelujah? has an interesting song history, as the song was originally released in 1984 by Leonard Cohen. The award will be shared by songwriter Leonard Cohen and Sony/ATV Music Publishing, who owns and administers the publishing rights for the song.
Throughout the years, several artists have lent their voice and interpretation of ?Hallelujah? including U2, Rufus Wainwright, Jeff Buckley, Imogen Heap and kd lang, among others.
Commenting on the award, Martin Bandier, Chairman & CEO of Sony/ATV Music Publishing said, ??Hallelujah? is one of those incredible songs that never ceases to catch the attention of everyone when it is played or performed. It is a truly emotional song that cuts across all genders, genres and religions -- it feels very spiritual. All of us at Sony/ATV are grateful to Musicnotes for this wonderful recognition. We are fortunate to publish this terrific song as well as to continue our long-lasting partnership with the talented and iconic Leonard Cohen.?

Kelley Lynch may have arranged for Sony to glean Leonard's royalties from sales; but she will never be able to arrange for anyone to usurp his legend. He is the unequivocal, sole owner.
That said, only Leonard deserves Hallelujah's royalties.

It's so good to read about Linda Perry. I really loved her 4 Non Blondes mega hit from 1992 "What's up". A fantastic song.

Re: Hallelujah Wins 2008 Song of the Year Award
I was just listening to U2 live in Boston (well actually in Somerville). After the five songs, they did a Q&A session. Bono was asked what song by someone else he wished he had written. His answer: Hallelujah. He then gave a glowing review of Leonard Cohen live and encouraged people to go see him, saying his show was (paraphrasing) the best live show ever.

Felicia,
Wonder which live LC concert Bono was talking about - although they are all brilliant!

That's great news - it's so good that Leonard's getting the recognition he deserves for that song, given that it's associated with many other artists as well. His version(s) will always be the best

Thank you for this. Could the 'thanks' at the end of the article be referring to Dino Soldo and Sharon Robinson? How would that come into play?
Warmest regards,
Mary

My son was listening to Radio 1 yesterday. The DJ announced 'never mind Alexandra Burke's version of Hallelujah, let's listen to the original'. He promptly played Jeff Buckley's! More missionary work required I think!

I guess there's not much chance of "Hallelujah" getting a belated Song of 1985 Award (that would help to put the record straight!).

Well, John, not unless you invent a time machine... But if you succeed, please also visit Leonard back in 1972 and tell him that everything will work out for him in the end and that in 2008 / 2009, he will still be up on stage, with a better performance than ever, and a better version of "Hallelujah" than ever, too (although in 1972, he might not even know yet what you are talking about...)
