hotel de france

Post by mickeye »

awhile back , i stated i heard a song by cohen , on much music, vh1 or the like , with lyrics referring to a hotel in paris (france maybe )a woman , who had something to do with the hotel , maybe something about a table and rose , then again maybe not . I stated he was standing outside a building , seemed like night , maybe by a stairway. Any rate was told it doesn t exist, but i saw it and heard it , and the last verse stated something about that woman and the cafe " something or another" in paris,
I came across a reference to hotel de france on another website , but it was just a note writen on a piece of paper "hotel de france"
So my question is , is there a song or poem with that name

i really liked the song and it is driving me nuts trying to figure out what it was, it was very very similar to waiting for a miracle if memory serves me , thanks , mickey emerson

Dear Mickeye, I think there's a good chance you are remembering a song called Le Vieux Cafe de la rue d'Amerique (my French spelling may be goofy). I think there's an English version called The Red Rose. The French version is famous with Mireille Mathieu but I don't know who translated/recorded the English version. It is a haunting song, incredibly wise and sad. I don't think Leonard Cohen ever recorded it but I can see how you would think that. His voice would suit it beautifully, especially now. I hope this may help you to track it down, if this is the song, and I'm pretty sure it is
Regarding the Hotel de France, I have stayed in a hotel by that name in the Contrescarpe neighborhood of Paris. It would be so cool if LC had stayed there, too!

well i down loaded la vie en rose and spus le ceil de paris , and seeing they are in french ,i have no way to compare the lyrics, have not found anything by her with the title you mentioned, but i am sure it was cohen , it was a video , and i didn t know who he was at the time ,it gave his name , although i downloaded kazza and imesh i was looking for coltrains and calhouns and everything else as so much time had passed i didn t remember the name till later , it s been awhile since i saw it , but i can still see parts in my mind ,it may be the song and it may be a rare recording , i don t know , i ll find it eventually, unless there is another cohen that resembles him in apperance and voice , thanks for the info , haven t found anything that fit the red rose ,red hot chili peppers ect all i ve found for now

Well, Mickeye, It's your song so you're probably right. It just seemed to fit. On the off chance that this song might be the one, I'll do a rough translation of the words and post them soon so you can at least compare.
