It is with a heavy heart that I pronounce this board dead. All the intelligent ones have departed the sea of banality. It was good once, and we should always try to remember those happier times. Maybe the Newsgroup can lead a revival now.
Departed and Gone I hope you are not departed and gone before you read this, because I think I know the ones you are talking about and I think they are still reading the board faithfully( probably not every word ) and hopefully will comment now and then, when we need them. Also this is a good place to find out what is happening with LC. So pease don't depart so quickly. There are quite afew I miss too.
It is amazing to me that people can pass judgment so easily on who is intelligent and who isnt. Sometimes it is enough just to communicate. Seems like LCs message has been in vain.
I rarely post. I posted several times on the old board. I have almost stopped reading the new board because it does seem to be the private preserve of two people. One of whom has over 3,000 posts on the Various Positions board. In less than a year.
If you look at the number of fans that posted on Various Positions in September 2001 compared to the number that posted in say, March 2002, you can see a drastic decline. In the last six months there were only about 5 people posting. The cartel took over and that was the end of Various Positions.
And since the Leonard Cohen Files board was revamped, the VP cartel have all but abandoned their former kingdom. Now they are intent on conquering this board. The same pattern will be repeated. Slowly, but surely, those who would like to contribute will choose to stay away.
Does the cartel do this intentionally? No, of course not. I think they do not understand the effect they have on the rest of us. And I am also certain they do not care either.
Linda and Kush, I have always thought your posts intelligent and I hope you do not abandon ship. But Departed and Gone is right when he says the board is not the same as it was and that the board was good once.
This isn't to say that silly (and even stupid) things were never written on the old board. They most certainly were. But the mix was better. You could always count on someone to rescue a thread from "banality". You didn't have a member who answered every single post with "Isn't Leonard WONDERFUL!" I exaggerate, but only slightly.
Fans could disagree with each other, vehemently, without being commanded to "smile". (Which, by the way, is enough to provoke anyone into baring their teeth). You could post under an amusing pseudonym without being accused of "cowardice". Remember "Mr. Dim" and "Ummm..."? How about "Robin Hood disguised as Einstein"? And who can forget the "psychiatric student" who kept requesting permission to use certain posts in their doctoral thesis? I remember them all with a great deal of fondness.
The old board was just more, well, more interesting.
So adieu, dear departed and gone. Peace to your ashes.
