we are planing to spend 3 weeks in Australia and would like to know the most popular backpackers destinations couldnt find any info. on the internet so any suggestions would help a lot...we are going to be there 15-20 jan. 2009 and want to spend some time on the beach..what will be the weather like

Melbourne and South Australia are really popular. Wether will be great. If interested in LC tickets, Melbourne is sold out so SA. Check out :

It is warm to stinking hot pretty much everywhere in Australia this time of year and there are too many beaches to even begin to list so you need to narrow down your request a bit if you want some advice.
I can tell you that the Victorian coast is popular and very busy through January. You could look at Torquay, Lorne, Apollo Bay, Rosebud for starters. I suggest you arrange some accomodation before you come.
