It was based on the premise of monkeys being able to type the works of Shakespeare if given enough monkeys and typewriters and time.
This link simulates the experiment and by going to it you help generate the monkeys typing....... the record is 8 letters at the moment.
My current monkeys have managed 7 letters (time is speeded up by the way!) and as I check them now I have 7 million monkeys and they have been typing for 15 million years.. and I only logged on 20 minutes ago.

Is this sad or what?

~ I've heard about that "experiment." It's not looking good for the monkeys, but much better for Shakespeare! They seem to get stuck on a few keys.

Pete! I just went there, and I have no idea how to read what my record was, but I swear one of the examples they were showing, "flash-card" style was "Leona" ~ Is it not perfectly clear that the monkeys were doing their synchronous best to spell out Leonard for me? The dears.....deers?......no, monkeys! I kept trying to get back to it, to confirm with more info, but I couldn't! But, what I saw is good enough for me

They should be trying for Cohen rather than Shakespeare!

Could you write a similar program to simulate this instead?

p.s. When you go to the Shakespeare monkeys the results you see are your results from you logging on. If you see 9 letters as best then press the submit. You might get that many letters in a few million million years...don't forget that everything is speeded up. Figures below the box show the number of monkeys and years etc. As more people log on the number of monkeys increase. BTW the e+7 after a number means to multiply that number by 10000000 (7 noughts)
