The WORD magazine (Jan 2009): The King of Comedy

Post by Davido »

The WORD magazine no 71, January 2009 issue is about to hit the shelves with our man the main image on the cover.
A 3-page article by David Hepworth (one of these is a full-page photo of a smiling LC holding his fedora to his chest, from O2 14 Nov).
'The King of Comedy: Leonard Cohen has come back just when we needed him most'.

I have just noticed the 'spine message' on this mag:
'' IF IT BE YOUR WILL....CAN I BE IN IT?'' - LEONARD COHEN

Oh dear, I suppose I'm going to have to buy "The Word" if Leonard's on the cover (though as usual, there's no one else in it who particularly interest me, and I'll have yet another CD that I'll never want to play). Leonard said years ago that he would be remembered as one of the greatest comedians of his time!

Cheers, John E

Well hello John...I recall kind words from you way back in the summer when I was fighting hard to get a ticket for m/c opera house!!! I managed three concerts in the end having been spured on to keep trying [opera house/edingburgh/men m/c] and have never been so relieved to have been a part of something so incredible!
Just read this post and can well imagine your horror at purchasing the word especially when I noticed recently that your 'meticulous guidance through many pages, especially those focusing on Leonard's belliefs and practices, was essential.' according to one Jim Devlin....all assuming there is only one John Etherington as there is only one Leonard!! ;-)
With best regards

The front page of the Word Magazine website http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk currently includes Mark Ellen and Kate Mossman talking briefly about and reading some highlights from the current issue (the one with LC, who is on their cover for what I think is about the third time).

Less than a minute in, Ms Mossman reads from David Hepworth's piece on LC, which (as anyone might expect who heard him on the weekly Word podcast recently rave about seeing LC in concert last month ) is not only hugely positive but a very fine piece of writing.

Hi Ms. Blue,

I'm very pleased to hear that you managed to see some concerts - especially Manchester Opera House (which night were you there?). I had a spare in row J for the first show, that I sold outside on the night. I could only get the one ticket intially, but then upgraded to a row B seat, that was released the night before. (my other shows were first O2, first Albert Hall and Brighton).

I still haven't bought "The Word", but I nearly did the other day, and probably will before it disappears. There's a great full page colour pic of Leonard in it. I really do object to buying a £4/5 magazine for three pages (I usually look for a couple of substantial articles).

It was indeed myself who got the credit in Jim Devlin's "Leonard Cohen in His Own Words" compilation. Jim also kindly gave me an acknowledgement in his first book, "Every Style of Passion".

All good wishes, John E
