Every December, the songs of Leonard Cohen are presented to a jammed packed LSPU Hall; by a diverse chorus of Newfoundland singers, songwriters, actors, filmmakers, writers and musicians. Well-known and not so well-known tunes penned by Canada’s poet-guru; have become a part of the holiday tradition for St. John’s audiences. Just the ticket to shake off the post Christmas blues!
Following an 8 night run last year and Cohen’s own appearance the following May, the 9th installation of Feast of Cohen has opted for new digs! This year’s Feast at the Heart (Holy Heart of Mary) Theatre promises to be an even richer experience with a larger and longer show!
Feast of Cohen brings to the stage 15 of Newfoundland’s finest artists accompanied by the production’s signature house band “The Beautiful Losers”. The Band will be featuring a new addition on “burning violin” - Angela Pickett, accomplished violinist and session player fresh from New York’s Juilliard School of Music. And of course, no Feast of Cohen would be complete without the angelic backup vocals of “The Cohen-ettes!”
Last year, on December 27th, Feast of Cohen Live CD was released marking the fortieth anniversary of the release of Leonard Cohen’s first LP Songs of Leonard Cohen. The Feast of Cohen Live CD (to purchase on-line atlanticcanadianmusic.com) is a 13 track selection of performances recorded during Feast of Cohen VI, 2005 and Feast of Cohen VII, 2006. No differently, this year’s Feast of Cohen VIIII will be recording all performances to be included in part in the next edition of Feast of Cohen Live CD planned launch in December ’09.
