record promo's

Post by mamalex »

does leonard's record compant do ANYTHING to promote his work? whenever i where a lc t-shirt out i get comments like "i loved his albums when i was in college", or "i can't believe you like leonard cohen-he's so obscure". even people who are very fond of his earlier work have no idea he still puts out records, and i've never seen a poster of him in a store.

Well, I wouldn't say that Sony is doing nothing to promote Leonard. It's just that the music business has changed so much and the volume is so huge - the good stuff easily is lost under tons of rubbish. And the record companies prefer to promote albums that may sell millions of copies - they don't care so much about the artists. Nowadays many artists who have had one really big hit just disappear and we don't hear anything from them in the future. The cycle is becoming shorter and shorter. Many singers are only throwaway stuff for the producers. Artists like Leonard who have been steady sellers for over 30 years are rare and in the future there won't be many of them. The record companies should hold those few in high esteem and make their best to promote their work.

For Ten New Songs Sony organized the promotional tour (meetings with media) in UK, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, US and Canada (another round was cancelled because of the 9/11 chaos). They produced the video clip (In My Secret Life), printed posters for the music shops, released some CD singles, made a video interview with Leonard plus the same on audio CD for the press and finally had a TV ad campaign in many countries.

Yeah, I recently found out there were posters printed in Poland by Sony Polska  Anyway, no way for us getting the few US/Canadian posters except ebay... I think there was better site for LC memorabilia, Jarkko linked it from here once, gemm.com?

Hanna kindly sent me the Polish TNS poster; it will be featured on the
Collectors' items pages in the near future.
http://www.gemm.com is a good site to find rare records etc.
from all over the world. Make a search for Leonard Cohen and
you will see hundreds of items.
