You know I never leave home in the evening until the nurse has gone home and servants are safely bedded down for the night.
Anytime after 9:30pm.

I was asking about you in the Campanile over the weekend. The young receptionist knew you and described you as the gentleman (sic) with the grey hair. She looked a little puzzled when I corrected her by saying that we prefer the term silver haired these days.

See you soon.

Thanks Urpal for your suggestions.

I think both pubs may be a bit on the small side for our purposes.

The Briton's long front narrow bar and small back rooms can get uncomfortably crowded come 5pm when the suits finish work.

The Peak too can get very crowded on a working day at 5pm. Does that Orish dragon of a landlady still run the Peak. I know the place has been up for sale for ever I just hope she disappears if ever anybody buys the place.

The John Willie Lee's Rain Bar across the road is a big roomy barn of a place but I think that too would get crowded come 5pm.

The other problem is the bleedin' football. There are games on the Tuesday and Wednesday so most pubs are going be full of football fans watching the games on TV.

So it's somewhere away from the business centre and say within 10 to 15 minutes walk away from the Opera House.

Perhaps somewhere around Salford station/Chapel Street end of town.

Over to the Mancs.

I'm afraid I don't do big and rarely get into Manchester centre, so I'm only really helping with a guide for the out of towner looking for some of the better "small sanctuaries" in this town.

For those who might want to meet a couple of friends somewhere very close to the Opera House before the gigs, apart from the Walkabout Bar mentioned previously, the main places nearby that I've come across are:

The Life Cafe/Late Room
http://manchesterbars.wordpress.com/200 ... ate-rooms/

Bar 38
http://www.manchesterbars.com/location-peterstreet.htm

Just up the way from them is the Manchester Radisson Hotel, previously the Free Trade Hall. For Dylan fans, they probably have a special Judas! Bar ;-)

The far side of the Opera House has been subject to some major re-development in the last few years - known as the Spinningfields development. It looks good, it looks flash. But I don't know it.

Monsieur Comet & myself will be in attendance on Friday and look forward to sinking a few sherberts where ever the locals decide upon

I have been in The Briton's & The Peak before and they are 2 cracking pubs, and no doubt we will be calling in sometime in the afternoon for a sample.

For Dylan concerts a Buskers Ball is usually organised in the The Kings Arms, always a good craic

Many happy memories of nights (and days) spent in the King Arms before and after Dylan gigs in the MEN Arena with C. P. Lee and all the the other lunatics. They certainly won't be watching the football in this pub.
The Kings Arms has something that not even any pub in Liverpool can boast of - an upstairs theatre!!
There is another pub across the main road under the bridge opposite Salford station that consists of just one enormous room, which depending on numbers would also be ideal.

I think somewhere in this area would be ideal. Just those few hundred yards away from the centre city pubs makes all the difference.
We have a number of forum members staying in the Travelodge Central which is only 486 feet away from the Kings Arms. The Opera house is then only 0.9 of a mile away.
Any Mancs out there who could up a few suggestions it would be appreciated.

BTW Windy if the Irish landlady in the Peak serves you short measure on your pint don't ask for a top up otherwise she will accuse you of being a troublemaker and will ask you to leave.

here's my recommendation

handy for the opera house, wouldn't be too busy early evening I wouldn't have thought

I can meet tuesday 17th and possibly friday although not sure about that yet, anyone interested let me know

here's another possibility, more spacious and loads of seating outside for those sultry manchester evenings, with a stroll along the canal on the way to the venue

Is the pub over the road called the Salford Arms?

LOL, always remember going in the Hole in the Wall in Bowness in the late seventies, and a mate ordering 8 bitters and a larger top, the landlord pointed to the door informing us he doesn't serve cocktails

Does anyone else get irritated by people clapping half way through the first or second line of a song? I have two weeks to work on this and let it go.

Hope to meet some of you.

Rob.
Farm yard noises at the start and during songs is normal from american crowds I'm afraid the average american can't keep his/her mouth shut for longer than a few seconds .

Frankie - is that really necessary? God knows who 'the average american' is. I'm more worried about the 'average bigot', who tends to make sweeping and perjorative generalisations about others ...

Any suggestions for the best place to park?
I hope to drive into Manchester mid to late afternoon on the Friday with Sat Nav Paula :D
I will research parking on the internet but if anyone has any recommendations then that would be helpful.

The Britons will be playing Leonard on request, yes it may be busy and not the Philharmonic but it has a certain charm and a garden and quietish little rooms to chat in. The Temple of Convenience is cool too and as for The Pev it has been for sale forever and Nancy may not be the one that The Man sang about but you never know.

much improved since the smoking ban I should imagine, it's a great place but you couldn't see the bar for smoke back in the day

Jondi

Thanks for the suggestions.
However I'm not too sure I want to hear Leonard being belted out on a pub sound system in a small and over crowded bar with a bunch of office workers prior to actually seeing him live.
The Temple Of Convenience which after the The Circus Tavern must be the smallest pub in Manchester, plus it has the filthest toilets in town. These places may be considered cool but they don't lend themselves to a meet up.
So get your thinking caps I know you Mancs will come up with the perfect venue.

Sorry on offence meant but almost all live shows in america are spoiled by the constant clapping and whopping during and at the start of songs, I remember Springsteen telling the audiance to wait till the end of the songs to clap of course nobody took any notice of him and drowned out the Ghost Of Tom Joad. :(
