Lizzie West on Leonard Cohen
I never heard of the lady, and she'd sound great if there wasn't for this little detail: I strongly dislike Walt Whitman.
You usualy don't have strong feelings for a poet if you don't like him. You just don't read his work. But it was so much more complicated to me with Walt Whitman and Herman Hesse (except for The Glass Bead Game, I like that one, and because of it I read almost all of his novels, but none of the other did I enjoy)...
They seem to be everybody's (but mine) favorites, so I had to go on and on explaining people why I don't like them.
'But Whitman is so great!', someone would say.
'Can I please just keep my right not to like that particular writer?'
'But you have to read it again, perhaps you didn't understand it the first time...'
