Does Leonard Cohen Play Chess?

Post by Tony »

I seem to recall reading somewhere that Leonard Cohen played chess and, although I put this question on the old site, the topic quickly mutated into a discussion of pre Raphaelite art. So does he play chess?

I have always liked Rossetti.
I can't say i am aware of him painting a chessboard.
Does anyone else know if the Pre-Raphaelites incorporated chess in their work?

i've always felt that italian masters did more harm to fine art than good.
they basicaly copied ancient style, and everybody continued to develop from there... who knows what would art of that time be like if it continued tradition of latins and other nations. probably less realistic and more interesting...
what do you think?
didn't chinese invent chess? was it already brought to europe?

Well, Tony, it appears that some are determined for it to go no differently here! I've never heard that Leonard plays chess, but my guess would be that Leonard wins chess.

Hi Tony and Lizzytysh,

I seem to remember seeing a scene of Leonard playing chess in the video I Am A Hotel. :?:

Wouldn't it be lovely to play a game of chess with Leonard 8) I can just picture those tapered fingers hoovering over the chess board! :) I am being silly of course but it's nice to dream!

I would imagine that Leonard is a mean backgammon player who takes no prisoners.........

I'd take him on as long as I can use my dice

 Hi Coco ~ Mr. Ed may be showing up any minute now to parody your comment regarding "those tapered fingers," as he did mine regarding his high arches. I'd do better with 30-second chess with Leonard, as I seem to do better with the instinctual moves vs. the strategy ad infinitum. I'd be interested to know the longest stretch Leonard's played a single game and with whom. Also, did he ever play it with his female counterparts? I'm not recalling the scene itself, but I have to believe that he does play.

Hi Iubita ~ Your response immediately brought to mind the words and melody of a song from the Fifties, "Just a dreeeeam, just a dreeeeeeam".....but then dreams are made to be had, aren't they :D ?

Well, when I think of his focus with words, and the intricacies of his lyrics and messages, it's hard to imagine that these tendencies wouldn't follow when he sits down to a game of chess 8) . Until I know differently......my mind's eye will hear him saying, "Checkmate." I know you understand.
