Hi all,
I've been lurking around here for a while, but only recently signed up for the board after the tour announcement.
I wanted to ask - has anyone here ever been to the Mt. Baldy Zen center?
I recently made a trip there from Los Angeles. The map on the Mt. Baldy website is hilariously innacurate so it took a while to even get in the general vicinity of the place. Once I got to where I thought it was, the locals told me it was "right across the street" and kept vaguely pointing to the trees. I spent about an hour driving back and forth past the supposed entrance, but couldn't find it. I don't know if the locals were just messing with me, and do this to everyone. Maybe they were monks in disguise. Or, possibly it was an enactment of a koan and the trees and snow constituted the "Zen center". Or, there really was a giant Zen temple but it had a Zen cloaking device inside. Either way, pretty hilarious.
Anyone ever made it inside? Am I just crazy, or was the temple hiding from me?

But that's where it is!"right across the street" and kept vaguely pointing to the trees.

It's an ex-scout camp - wooden cottages hidden between the trees!

Welcome. Are you Irish? - you sound as if you are. Be sure to get in touch with Christine if you're going to an LC gig in California. She's hoping to organise a get-together of Cohenites.

I'm actually Zimbabwean. So, my ancestors are a mix of Irish, Scottish and English emmigrants - probably outlaws, for all I know. My family tree is kind of shady - I figure, if someone traveled that far from Europe to a colony, they were probably on the run.damellon wrote:Graememullen

But I've been living in the states since december 1999.

I tried to go down one side street that looked promising, but my car is not very well snow equipped. I guess next trip I'll have to suck it up and pay the ridiculous "national park" parking rates for a foot expedition.jarkko wrote:But that's where it is!"right across the street" and kept vaguely pointing to the trees.![]()

Good to know it actually exists though!
