Rant about ISPs

Post by John the Shorts »

Since I switched to AOL 8 I have had no end of problems with Internet Explorer and I am now feeling evil     !!

Knowing that a lot of sites (such as this one) notify you of a private message by opening a pop-up window I didn't turn on the stop pop-ups that is part of the AOL8 package.

So what happens now? :?: Everytime I get a pop up message I actually get two, the original and one from AOL8 (I assume as this is the only thing I have installed new to my system in some time) and then Explorer crashes and half the icons from my systray disappear (at least they are still running though)

Now I know 98 is not the most stable of systems but I do wonder if software designers are doing their job properly. When I worked in the industry we used to test each subroutine/procedure/function, almost to death, so that it would accept any input and would only produce acceptable output. The whole was then put together and tested just as exhaustively before being released to the customers.

Has the need to get a new release on the system taken over from getting a system that works? Is it more important for todays software manufacturers to produce something tomorrow than to provide high quality software that does the job?

I'm sick to death of being told (and this is not just AOL) "That's scheduled for correction in Update 5.1.4.2"

If it's not ready for release guys just don't release it

JTS (That's my rant for today)

Dear John ~

I've just come from the chatroom, and this is the 4th rant I've seen between today and a couple days ago re: changes to one's system that only results in mega problems. It's beginning to sound like "change is not good," and I know that's not true! You have my undivided sympathy and empathy, a double dose of each.

John,

Switch to Mozilla. You can disable unrequested popups. Internet Explorer is bloatware.

The problems I'm having will end (I hope) at the end of July when I switch to NTL Broadband. They can't be any worse (can they?)

Anne

I'll have a look at Mozilla when I get a decent ISP. Thanks

Our household also uses Mozilla and we find it very reliable. We used several others previously and this seems the best up to now.

I have never heard of Modzilla. I use BT I don't have many problems with that but I have heard a lot of people complain that once you install AOL you can't get rid of it. Let me know what NTL Broadband is like that was an option I was considering.

I also went over to Mozilla. I have had no problems either. A friend told me about it, who did a computer science degree. But I am on Broadband which I know JTS is waiting for.

I will let you know how NTL broadband is as soon as I am able to formulate an opinion.

Anne, Margaret, Byron, et al

I have downloaded Mozilla but have not bothered installing it. My theory, to date, has been why down load a browser when IE does a job (not a great job but it does a job)

I think the time is coming though when needs must and MS can take a jump.
