First Portishead, now this: After fifteen years of touring inactivity, a post on Leonard Cohen’s message board announced that the seventy-one year old Canadian singer-songwriter would tour in 2008. Full dates and details will be unveiled in February. Cohen will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10th.

I've been a huuuge Leonard Cohen fan for years, but I never visited this site until today. Something told me today to go to his official site to see if he is ever performing anywhere. (Since I live in the same city, I thought there might be some stories of him showing up in some underground venue). So I get here and see this announcement. Isn't that an interesting coincidence? Hmm.. Guess I am meant to see him perform. Amazing!

Well this is another one of the 'lurkers' and I have enjoyed checking out the Forum for quite a while but the announcement of the Tour has given me the courage to make a first post !! I was introduced to Leonard's music in 1968 and I had the pleasure of seeing him play Dublin Ireland on the the 1988 tour . The concert was amazing and there was a very amusing incident on the night ---a 'disciple ' somehow managed to get on stage to pay homage to Leonard and was quickly escorted off with a certain degree of urgency by the stage hands --Leonard in an aside asked that he be treated gently --'He is not a terrorist you know ' he said to much laughter !!!!---however shortly after the same person somehow got back on stage and this time he was unceremoniously pulled off much to Leonards relief who quipped ' Maybe he is a terrorist ' --again to much audience laughter !!!

Well here I am 20 years later hoping that Dublin will be on the Tour itinerary and that the Terrorist does not show up this time !!!

You mean we had to wait all this time for that anecdote, Charco? Good things are worth waiting for... it's much more timely to hear it now, anyway. Very funny! I can 'hear' Leonard saying both of us... to much laughter! Welcome, and I hope for you that he goes to Dublin, but I'm guessing you'll travel beyond Dublin, if he doesn't make it there.

My first post too..have also been a lurker!
Tell me something, is this best place to be for the announcement of dates and locations?
I am in Canada near Toronto. Also have a friend monitoring for Halifax.
How likely do you folks think it is that he'll make it to the east coast of Canada?
It's "February" so when in Feb is the announcement of dates and tickets expected?
Questions questions! Sheesh. Any input would be gratefully appreciated.

No date for when in February has been suggested. It could [always] be later than February.

An UNQUALIFIED YES to your question whether or not this is the best place to be... but then lurking ought to have already answered that for you .

Let me see... Toronto/Montreal would be considered 'east' coast, right? My guess is Yes.

Oh my dear goodness no.
Toronto/Montreal is nowhere near east. Newfoundland is the most easterly point in Canada.

And speaking of Newfoundland, Every year over the Christmas holidays at the LSPU Hall there is an event called The Feast of Cohen. Local musicians (loving, adoring fans of Leonard Cohen) pay tribute to him in the form of his songs. They've even released a cd. It's stunning! They did a show each night this year over the span of 8 nights, and sold out each one so far as I know! It's been happening for quite a few years too. I had the pleasure of going for the first time this year. I couldn't believe it. A man by the name of Joel Hynes completely stole the show.

And with that, let me introduce myself! I'm Andrea and if you can't tell already, I'm from Newfoundland.
I currently live in Halifax but will be back home come May month.

I decided to join this site to keep an eye on the tour dates for my mom and I.
I grew up listening to Leonard, his albums always playing throughout my house as a child. My mother and I are such fans. It would mean so much to the both of us if we could go see him play. His music plays such a huge part in this mother-daughter bond we have.

It's likely a slim, slim chance he would make it all the way to Newfoundland, but hey, a young lady can hope. Traveling to see him would likely not work because mom works shift work (with the rare chance of getting vacation time last minute), and I don't know if I could bring myself to go without her.

He's got a HUGE fan base out there from the age of 3 to the age of 103.

please please please cross your fingers for us east coast canadians!

Haha. Well, ya gotta make the divisions somewhere. Since I can't imagine Leonard will show up in Newfoundland [I could be wrong, of course, but I'd be surprized to see that ~ however, reading those details of that 8 nights... and I remember being impressed by details about it some time back, I hope I am wrong!], I had to go with the closest-east where he might. If Quebec is still considered "Canada," I doubt he'll perform there, either, even if it is further east. So, of the possibilities I know of and to answer your question, Toronto and Montreal had to be "east" ~ otherwise, it seems you're going to just be outta luck. Or go West, young woman, go West.

I hope the two of you will consider that you only live once [so far as we 'know' know]. Missing a day of work is, well, worth the trade by far!

Hey, I used to live in Toronto, and considered Ontario "East Coast". The way east stuff was considered "Maritimes". East Coast Canada was in line with East Coast US (in spirit as well as longitude). Central Canada (Manitoba, Saskatchewan) are so different from Ont/Quebec that we didn't want to be grouped as "Central", I guess.

Oh, YESSSSSSS! I've not been lurking, exactly -- registered here for a while, but lost my user-info and had to re-register. Have been a quiet member for about 2 years.

I'm a huge LC fan -- have been for about 12 years, and never had a chance to see him live (except the speaking engagement at Stanford recently, which was very cool.)

I will travel for this, as far as I need to go!
