I had to run out and get some rum to make my rum-raisin chocolates this year (and, of course, for spiking the egg nog). As I was walking into the liquor store, there was a fairly ragged looking woman ringing a bell next to the iconic red bucket of the Salvation Army. She was shivering, one hand tucked into an armpit, and she was singing a carol in time to the ringing of her bell. She hadn't seen me, but I started singing along with her as I approached, plunging my hand into my jingling coat pocket. Her smile grew, and her volume increased. I dropped my spare change into the bucket, and we finished the chorus together.
She said, "Merry Christmas."
I smiled and nodded, and started to turn to go into the store.
But then she vocally stumbled saying, "Er, Happy... Holidays? I-I don't know what you celebrate."
I shrugged, "I guess I celebrate them all."
