Freestyle.
(for Ciaran)
Such tension on the board:
take care to position
fingers and toes before
the gun explodes. Now go.
From coat hanger shoulders,
let outstretched arms carve sharp
angles with the surface. Keep
the stroking shark-fin straight.
No need to thrash; attack
the tumble-turn. Twist fast,
be first to race for home.
You're cool when you swim;
so beautiful both in
and out of the pool.
Freestyle.

Re: Freestyle.
Just found out yesterday: "Freestyle" is to be on permanent exhibition at Towerbank Primary School (Edinburgh), screwed to a wall .
The poem has found its natural location, and I'm dead chuffed

OH, THAT'S AWESOME, ANDREW!!! CONGRATULATIONS ~ and I'm sure you ARE chuffed
!!!
Who is "Ciaran" to you? I wondered before, but now with your poem on her permanently displayed, I really want to know.
How did it come about? Did she share it? Did you share it? Was there a tribute competition?

Re: Freestyle.
Lovely piece of work Andrew.
Lizzy,
Ciaran is an Irish version of the name Kieran

Re: Freestyle.
OH, thanks, Red Poppy. So, who is Kieran, then? A real person or a mythical swimmer? A male, too, then? Kieron [from here] has an "o" vs. an "a", so is it still a female?

Re: Freestyle.
Explanation time!
My youngest son, Ciaran, asked me to write a swimming poem for his 11th birthday.
I don't do poetry to order, but when it's your own child, and a champion swimmer too, it's impossible to refuse
.
I wanted to make it run fast/sharp: my working title was "50 metres", hence the (mainly) iambic tri-meter form, which reads like a set of instructions as directed by his coach.
The last stanza is sentimental: well, it was a birthday gift to my freestyle son
.
When Ciaran read the poem, he smiled and said " Dad, can you get this published?"
It's exhibited in his school.
This has nothing to do with the fact that his Head Teacher saw him win gold in the Edinburgh and Lothians Schools Swimming Championships last month.
Every poem finds its natural location: the last one I wrote about Ciaran was screwed to a wall in his nursery school..."Busy Day". It was also published in "Magistri Pro Pace", and can be found in my posts on the L.C. files.
