Andrei - thanks for the clarification. I can see what you mean, especially in terms of 'half-explaining' songs. Children are often very literal creatures...explaining something like "I love you in the morning/our kisses deep and warm" can be easily done without getting into details that would be ina...

Thanks for the article, Tom. :) I never realized there were so many 'rules'. It's so much easier to make a mix of music when you know a person already likes the music...first impressions being lasting ones, I have to make this a good one.

Is the Chicago - Schubas concert also intended fro the press? I just checked their website and it's not up on the ticketing page. Anjani's not listed at all, actually. Oh, this would make my - year. Or decade!

I was not introduced to Leonard Cohen by my parents, but had to discover** him for myself. And I am lucky to have found him at an early age... though sadly (and it's kind of ironic as I go to a school in Canada full of Jewish people.... and I am neither Canadian by birth nore Jewish as Leonard is) ...

Don't Go Home With Your Hard-On

In creating a mix to introduce someone to Leonard Cohen, would you or would you not include "Don't Go Home With Your Hard-On"? My judgement on whether or not to include it is skewed by how much I adore the song. I wish I'd heard it several years ago. When I first read about it (here) I could not bel...

What on earth do you all make of the story of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha at the great feast? (She spills the wine and it spreads over everything, the table, settings, guests, even outside.) I'm puzzled over it. It seems to be completely random. The narrator says he thinks the story is 'apocalyptic', ...

Thanks for your replies, everyone. I do appreciate them. I hope this is as interesting as you all think it will be. I'm pulling a lot of this from my personal journal, so lizzytysh, I am keeping a personal record of this. Manna, I always hear the words in my head when reading...things like "A-----s"...

Beautiful Losers reading project

I mentioned in another thread that my father and I are reading Beautiful Losers together over my Spring Break (although we've gotten behind, so finishing the book will probably take a lot longer). Manna suggested I start a thread about the experience over here. This will be kind of random, so I'm go...

Re: Beautiful Losers

Hi Beccka, I'm interested to know two things - your age, and how reading the book with your father works. Do you read chapters simultaneously and then discuss them? Okie...sorry to steer the thread off course again...and I can't say people didn't warn me...but, we're 47 pages into Beautiful Losers ...

You're going to find "Beautiful Losers" far more explicit than you ever dreamed. ~ Lizzy I think I remember seeing somewhere where Leonard said that his daughter had never read "Beautiful Losers" I don't think he had a problem with that. Now you guys are making me *really* curious. At the l...

John's got a point about kids raised on Cohen rebelling against or tiring of him...I'm the only one of my seven siblings who still likes him, and even I went through long periods of not listening to some or any of his music. Kids will rebel against anything if given the chance. Laura: yeah, I was wo...

You have quite the Summer Break ahead of you, Beccka   8) . Your relationship with your Dad may never be quite the same :) . I'm really excited about reading the book. The last book we read together was The Clockwork Orange .... Beautiful Losers isn't in that category, is it? Hi John ~ ...

Dad still likes Cohen, although we argue over the relative worth of Dear Heather. Neither of us has read 'Beautiful Losers', so we'll be reading it together over my Spring Break. (As an aside, I love the translation of the introduction to the Chinese edition, "more of a sunstroke than a book.") A ch...

Oh, wow, I never got the "she fixed herself" line as anything more than trying to make herself look better, or more recently 'fixing' as in cleaning up what can be left behind after sex. Um. Anyway, I do think that for most kids the sexual or violent imagery of Cohen's music would go straight over t...

Ooh, I like this topic. 1) How old were you when you first listened to Leonard? The first time I remember hearing Cohen I was four, but I'm pretty sure I'd heard him previously. (2) How much did you understand of the sexual/violence references? I remember 'Suzanne' first and didn't get the sexual re...
