Illuminated Fate

Slowly he begins to fade
into his own abyss
where water-wheels of silver cleave
under the nightly hiss
No postage stamp, no telegram
will show you where he is
unless of course you find a map
lit by a darkened kiss

The appetites of love have come
to drown you with their weight
The ghostly habit of love impedes
the stranger by the gate
The stranger will always tarry
until his package comes
with a postage stamp afixed to it
licked by my creature's tongue

Bodies and their bodies
have stitched onto the night
where only greed surrenders
to the boring morning light
And summoned with a little glance
she soaks into your wrist
and body parts begin to rise
like the morning mist

Now you have found yourself
in the center of the room
where all the women look at you
like you're everybody's groom
Then packages with stamps do come
and telegrams arrive
with the eyes of women stamped to them
to keep the night alive

Just as the night turns beautiful
and you step into the light
you realize it wasn't you
who dampened their appetite
Infact the girl who touched your wrist
a little while ago
has up and left the room
just like a springtime snow

So you turn to your two friends
and to the city beyond the gate
the stars fall 'round your body
illuminated fate
Then you stagger to the doorway
and you turn back to the room
where all the brides are taken
and everyone's a groom

I sure do like this, Matt. Its cadence is akin to one of Leonard's. I like many things about it; just too many to comment on at the moment. I hope others will. Great imagery and means of expression.

Hi Regis,

Beautifully crafted. Evocative and mysterious. The beauty of night's ink is in all our souls. Thanks for this piece.

Yours from downunder :D

These should be/are the lyrics of a song!
It already fits the tune of "Desolation Row"

I agree with the others, a wonderful work. And it makes me miss that time where we used to use stamps.
