My Leonard Cohen cover

Post by justinburnett »

Hello all.

After some initial enquiries, it seems that this is the place to post this :-) Thanks to those who helped me find my way. I'm fairly new to the forum, though I did participate a little in the newsgroup quite a long time ago.

I'm a longtime Leonard Cohen fan. His songs were some of the first that I learned, and The Story of Isaac was the first song I ever performed solo and accompanying myself on guitar. I have been known to play a bunch of his songs (mostly early stuff) during performances, but the first thing I've recorded is A Thousand Kisses Deep. I thought I'd post a link here, in case anyone might like to hear it. I think it turned out fairly well. It's a fairly simple recording, faster than the original, and acoustic.

So, if you feel so inclined, please do give it a listen and let me know what you think. My covers page (where the Cohen song resides), as well as my other musical places, are in my signature at the bottom of my posts. I hope you enjoy the song, and I look forward to any feedback you might have to offer.

Take care

Hi Justin~

I really enjoyed listening to your piece. The guitar tempo gave what could have been just a mimic of LC, your personal touch and breathed a new aspect into this great song. It also could have been a real disaster :) had you not done it so well. Thanks for sharing.

regards,
Laurie

Justin,

That was really well done. Your rendention almost made it seem like a completely new song. Very different from the sound-alikes that I have been accustomed to in LC covers. Thanks for the link.

Hey, Justin!

I love the initial photo on your "Covers" page :D ! Your gas stove; your bustelo, Cuban coffee pot; your toaster; your mug; the colour of your tiles; and the reflection of your face in your water kettle, with the fire burning beneath. Great, just great 8) !

You're right that the speed is increased in your cover. Anyone feeling the original is too slow, will be pleased with its speed. It sounds like you understand the essence of the song, even so. I like hearing the guitar with the melody. It really makes me want to hear Leonard do an acoustic rendering of this wonderful song.

Very nice! Nice guitar guy! I like the speedier tempo, and the acoustic - great! Perferred over the synth.

Great guitar work, Justin. By changing the tempo you made me listen to the song more closely. Give us more.

Nick Drake fan?

I really like the guitar-playing but the vocals are just a bit...not there, emotionally. Great style though.

Hello all

Sorry for not posting sooner. I must seem like a troll, posting like that and then disappearing. It's just been kind of busy here in my life lately, and a bunch of things have slid by me.

Thanks to everyone who listened to my cover and took the time to comment. I do appreciate the feedback. Glad to hear that I averted disaster :-) The picture was taken in my kitchen in Korea last year -- how I miss that gas stove. As for the emotion in the vocals, that's always a difficult issue. I admit that none of my music has vocals which are really noticeably enotional. It's there but frequently very subtle, and between the compromises of low-tech recording on the computer perhaps it gets lost sometimes. As for Nick Drake, I still haven't been able to develop a taste for his music, though I do recognize that it's good stuff. I need to try again soon.

I'm glad that people enjoyed what they heard, for the most part. If I have a bit of time, I might post some more. It's just hard to get the house to myself to do the recording :-)

Take care

Hi folks. Just wanted to mention that I've added another cover to my page. You may not be interested, since this time around it's a Bob Dylan cover, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. Not sure when I might tackle another Cohen song, but I'll let you know if and when I do.

Take care
