Help! My best freind asked me to read something at her wedding-- id really like to find something by LC that's appropriate, but I dont know where to start-- he has sooo much stuff! Can anyone suggest a poem (or even lyrics) that might be appropriate to read at a wedding ceremony?
Thanks!

Hi lacerta ~ Welcome to the Forum! The most obvious, right off the top, would be Dance Me to the End of Love," though with more thought, I'm sure I would come up with others ~ as others likely will.

Lacerta....if you can be a little more democratic in your choice then I'd recommend Bob Dylan's "Wedding Song" which is perfect for such an occasion. However, I can see that his froggy croak may be a problem for such a solemn occasion. Anyway, here's the song pasted from a lyrics page. A little editing may also be necessary.
Wedding Song

I love you more than ever, more than time and more than love,
I love you more than money and more than the stars above,
Love you more than madness, more than waves upon the sea,
Love you more than life itself, you mean that much to me.

Ever since you walked right in, the circle's been complete,
I've said goodbye to haunted rooms and faces in the street,
To the courtyard of the jester which is hidden from the sun,
I love you more than ever and I haven't yet begun.

You breathed on me and made my life a richer one to live,
When I was deep in poverty you taught me how to give,
Dried the tears up from my dreams and pulled me from the hole,
Quenched my thirst and satisfied the burning in my soul.

You gave me babies one, two, three, what is more, you saved my life,
Eye for eye and tooth for tooth, your love cuts like a knife,
My thoughts of you don't ever rest, they'd kill me if I lie,
I'd sacrifice the world for you and watch my senses die.

The tune that is yours and mine to play upon this earth,
We'll play it out the best we know, whatever it is worth,
What's lost is lost, we can't regain what went down in the flood,
But happiness to me is you and I love you more than blood.

It's never been my duty to remake the world at large,
Nor is it my intention to sound a battle charge,
'Cause I love you more than all of that with a love that doesn't bend,
And if there is eternity I'd love you there again.

Oh, can't you see that you were born to stand by my side
And I was born to be with you, you were born to be my bride,
You're the other half of what I am, you're the missing piece
And I love you more than ever with a love that doesn't cease.

You turn the tide on me each day and teach my eyes to see,
Just bein' next to you is a natural thing for me
And I could never let you go, no matter what goes on,
'Cause I love you more than ever now that the past is gone.

I am going to suggest "Always" I know Leonard didn't write it but his version of it was stunning and embodies all the sentiments required for a wedding.

"I'll be loving you always, with a love thats true always..........."

 ~ now see, there ya' go, Paula. That was the song I chose to "sign" [ASL] ~ and, in fact, it was one of my parents' two, wedding songs. I'm guessing [hoping] it didn't occur to me here because it was written by Irving Berlin, rather than Leonard.

Lacertta (sp?) and BTW Shwmae and welcome

You could start off with The Guests, if not there's always Came So Far For Beauty or Take This Longing, True Love Leaves No Traces or even True Love Leaves No Traces

I am off course assuming that you think this wedding is a good thing - if not then perhaps something like Why Don't You Try may be more appropriate or if you feel the relationship is doomed Iodine

JTS (I really think you should avoid Don't Go Home With Your Hard On  )

Excellent suggestion, Kush....I hope your friend will consider Bob Dylan's lyrics for reading, Lacerta. John has a couple more good ideas, too....though I'll leave it at a couple  . Theoretically, no reason she can't have Leonard and Dylan.

I would suggest if it was a successfull wedding, the song should be.........
"Don't go home with your h*ard on"

George

Sorry m8 but if you have to remind people not to go him with it then it ain't a success.

BTW I'm surprised no one picked me up on posting the same song twice - maybe True Love Leaves No Traces is so good you have to do an encore/reprise?

Tom/tom ~

I've just read the words and how perfect "Slowly I Married Her" would be if any [preferably all  ] of the factors aligned with their relationship. It's really true with how some relationships come together ~ and end up the most lasting ones

"Slowly I married her", one of my favourite poems too. Playing a recording of Leonard reading this would be an idea at the wedding.

Yes, from rasky's movie... Why it is not available on Master Poems bootleg. I think I will record the sound from the tape to CDR this summer when nobody did...
