I am waiting for someone else to decide,
for someone else to sign the paper,
for someone else to name the day,
for someone to tell me,
for someone else to lead me down the walkway,
for someone else to fasten the straps,
for someone else to put the needle in my skin,
for someone else to say that it's all over.

Hi Jaked ~

Well, I've just written another message to you that couldn't possibly be more relevant to this posting of yours.

"How to make gravy" by Paul Kelly. IMHO beats The Pogues, hands down, a Christmas song to make you cry.
Hello Dan, it's Joe here, I hope you're keeping well
It's the 21st of December, and now they're ringing the last bells
If I get good behaviour, I'll be out of here by July
Won't you kiss my kids on Christmas Day, please don't let 'em cry for me
I guess the brothers are driving down from Queensland and Stella's flying in from the coast
They say it's gonna be a hundred degrees, even more maybe, but that won't stop the roast
Who's gonna make the gravy now? I bet it won't taste the same
Just add flour, salt, a little red wine and don't forget a dollop of tomato sauce for sweetness and that extra tang
And give my love to Angus and to Frank and Dolly,
Tell 'em all I'm sorry I screwed up this time
And look after Rita, I'll be thinking of her early Christmas morning
When I'm standing in line

I hear Mary's got a new boyfriend, I hope he can hold his own
Do you remember the last one? What was his name again?
(Just a little too much cologne)
And Roger, you know I'm even gonna miss Roger
'Cause there's sure as hell no one in here I want to fight
Oh praise the Baby Jesus, have a Merry Christmas,
I'm really gonna miss it, all the treasure and the trash
And later in the evening, I can just imagine,
You'll put on Junior Murvin and push the tables back
And you'll dance with Rita, I know you really like her,
Just don't hold her too close, oh brother please don't stab me in the back
I didn't mean to say that, it's just my mind it plays up,
Multiplies each matter, turns imagination into fact
You know I love her badly, she's the one to save me,
I'm gonna make some gravy, I'm gonna taste the fat
Tell her that I'm sorry, yeah I love her badly, tell 'em all I'm sorry,
And kiss the sleepy children for me
You know one of these days, I'll be making gravy,
I'll be making plenty, I'm gonna pay 'em all back.
I saw them live last Saturday night, the best.

Hi Christine ~

Thanks for printing the lyrics. It made understanding the song much easier.

I've worked in two prisons [one men's treatment facility for drug offenders and one women's]; a Federal offender release facility; a women's halfway house; and a community treatment center for men and women still on state status. At meal time, everyone stood in lines. I overheard conversations similar to Paul Kelly's, between residents and on the phones. Not all brothers remained true and not all children understood why Daddy or Mommy weren't there. That's a moving song. Does Paul sing from experience?

Is he a Brit or Irish? Sorry to not recognize the difference in singing accent.

Hi Lizzy :D
Let's call Christine over here to compare. I was beginning to suspect we were sisters separated at birth but what the hey, twins, even closer.

Paul Kelly's an Aussie.

I'm not sure what you mean Blond Madona when you tell me - Can't feel it jaked. If you're making this up then you're a wanker.

Do you mean you can not beleive my poem?
Or is because I do'nt match up to what you expected from a song you heard?
I am sorry if my reality does not measure up to someones poetry.

But I thank you for reading what i've wrote.

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord and has made
the Lord his hope and confidence.

Apparently, death row inmates have internet access. I did not know. Right on. Do non-death row inmates also have internet access? Is it full access or limited? I don't know if we've ever had an inmate here before, neither someone posing as one. (I have no way to confirm or deny your state outside of trusting you, and if you're an inmate, are you worthy of trust? Mmmm, conundrum. And if you're a poser, then I think you're a wanker too.) I hope that's not an offensive word, inmate, is there a better one?

Personally, I think the death sentence is stupid. Killing another just makes things even worse; nobody (necessarily) learns anything, nothing is helped, the world's pain increases. You sound helpless, I feel helpless too.

Are you familiar with Mumia Abdul-Jamal? I listen to him on the radio; I like him. I can't attest to the truth of it, but he's given me the impression that death row is a place of tremendous personal growth. (though I don't like that cornball phrase, personal growth. Think I'll go hug a tree.)

Manna you think "I have no way to confirm or deny your state outside of trusting you, and if you're an inmate, are you worthy of trust?"

I guess you think not.

I barely know you. I haven't decided whether to trust you or not yet. I also get to change my mind if I want.

Blonde Madonna, that was terrific. I loved it! I don't think anything could beat that version and that's a concert I know I'd've loved. Strangely enough, I get to hear a fair amount of live music with mandolin, violin, bass and yep, even banjo sometime (but usually banjo when John McEuen, the Nitty Gritty DB's string wizard's in town). Two of his sons, fantastic musicians too, live here so they all play together a couple of times a year. It's always an amazing show. Anyway, your song took me right to Mr. Bojangles....
I KNEW A MAN BOJANGLES
AND HE'D DANCE FOR YOU
IN WORN OUT SHOES

WITH SILVER HAIR A RAGGED SHIRT
AND BAGGY PANTS
THE OLD SOFT SHOE

HE JUMPED SO HIGH
HE JUMPED SO HIGH
THEN HE LIGHTLY TOUCHED DOWN

chorus;
MISTER BOJANGLES
MISTER BOJANGLES
MISTER BOJANGES DANCE

I MET HIM IN A CELL
IN NEW ORLEANS
I WAS DOWN AND OUT

HE LOOKED AT ME TO BE
THE EYES OF AGE
AS HE SPOKE RIGHT OUT

HE TALKED OF LIFE
TALKED OF LIFE
HE LAUGHED SLAPPED HIS LEG A STEP

chorus

HE SAID HIS NAME BOJANGLES
THEN HE DANCED A LICK
ACROSS THE CELL

HE GRABBED HIS PANTS FOR A BETTER STANCE
THEN HE JUMPED SO HIGH
HE CLICKED HIS HEELS

THEN HE LET GO A LAUGH
LET GO A LAUGH
SHOOK BACK HIS CLOTHES ALL AROUND

chorus

HE DANCED FOR THOSE
AT MINSTREL SHOWS AND COUNTRY FAIRS
THROUGHOUT THE SOUTH

HE SPOKE WITH TEARS OF FIFTEEN YEARS
HOW HIS DOG AND HIM
TRAVELED ABOUT

HIS DOG UP AND DIED
HE UP AND DIED
AND AFTER TWENTY YEARS HE STILL GRIEVED

chorus

I was thinking NGDB for this song and I wasn't going to post a link but this is too good to miss (and since we're family, I figured you'd indulge me).... Jerry Jeff Walker/David Bromberg.

Mr. Bojangles makes me cry every time I hear it. Thanks for posting it, Christine. I'll wait until tonight to listen. Listening to Luciano Pavarotti's "Ave Maria" is enough for this morning. May he rest in peace.

I am glad that art is more important than life.
It makes me realise that the gap is still as big as it ever was between them that has and them that has'nt.

He answered, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom, but to them it has not been given. For those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.”
Mathhew 13: 11-12

Dear Jaked ~

I know it may seem so, but it's not and that you surely know, wherever you are. The stickler with relating to you here, as an inmate, much less one biding his time as determined by others, the appeals process, changes in laws, pure luck, or tenaciousness if guilt/innocence are real issues, and whatever else is impacting your fate... is that we honestly don't know if you are as you are cryptically suggesting.

You could be a real person sitting in prison... or you could be someone at their computer having a lark... we already have one such in the form of Paula Hansen, asking about War or Muffins. You could easily be at the opposite end of her spectrum, but at 'her' same keyboard.

If you're actually an inmate, rather than your responses that seem intended to guiltify those who aren't taking you seriously or focusing on you... you might want to be more open and sharing about your circumstances. Where are you... what institution? How long have you been there? What was your crime? These may seem personal, but you're using scripture, poetic format, and diminishing comments for the goal of our taking you seriously. Straight-up conversation would work best, Jaked.

Lizzy,
Thank you for youre comments.
After I had posted that post I regreted it. It seemed self centered which I try not to be. I try to focuss on life. My apologies Manna if I seemed so.
If I say who and where I am this facility will be removed from me.
It is onley availabel to me until 09/20/07.
As are all things.
I do not know anyone called Paula Hansen so she is not me.
I have been here for 10 years this fall.
My crime was to follow the words of Deuteronomy 19:21

"And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot."

I have learned since that the new law superseeds the old law

"In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son to be the satisfaction for our sins."
John 4:19~

To every thing there is a season.
