A POEM

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY
It’s not contained by fur or skin -
It howls beyond the scale of Sin –
It shames your smile and ridicules your game.
It was not reared at any breast,
No sibling shared its muddled nest –
The animal that Adam couldn’t name.
It lurks between the word and act,
Between the grasping and the fact.
There is no hope or dream it cannot tame.
It smiles as love becomes despair,
And unknown skies are in its stare -
The animal that Adam couldn’t name.
Immune against the Mighty Word,
It lives among the sad, absurd
Environs of disaster without blame.
It’s no use being circumspect,
There are no walls you may erect
Against the beast that Adam couldn’t name.
It’s not contained by fur or skin -
It howls beyond the scale of Sin –
It shames your smile and ridicules your game.
It was not reared at any breast,
No sibling shared its muddled nest –
The animal that Adam couldn’t name.
It lurks between the word and act,
Between the grasping and the fact.
There is no hope or dream it cannot tame.
It smiles as love becomes despair,
And unknown skies are in its stare -
The animal that Adam couldn’t name.
Immune against the Mighty Word,
It lives among the sad, absurd
Environs of disaster without blame.
It’s no use being circumspect,
There are no walls you may erect
Against the beast that Adam couldn’t name.
