Andrew (Darby) mentioned him sometimes past, but I just discoverd Harry Manx this week. Cool and original. His blend of blues and indian music is taged "mystissippi". He lives in British Colombia and apparently is a fan of LC. Check his tour listing. He seems to be on a permanent tour all over the place. Harry Manx >>>

I sure like what he's dubbed and can only imagine [actually I can't] what a blend of the two might sound like. Very cool ~ that I can imagine. I'll see if he's coming near Florida. His being a fan of LC is a good sign.

Mmmm... very Interesting looking man... great eyes, great smile, great facial structure.

Okay. Back for the schedule.

"Mantras for Madmen" ~ great album title, too 8) .

Geez-oh-Pete ~ Nothing close to me, but I used to live in Lansing, Michigan and know both places where he'll be playing/workshopping... not that that's worth a hill o' beans. I'll at least let my friend who lives in Traverse City, and used to live there, too, know that he's worth driving down for. Whoops... better check the dates! Maybe, he's already been there. Nope. Still good... but very soon.

That small segment of town has really come a long way! She's been telling me it has really been developed in an artistic/cultural sense... and reading about the Creole Gallery, I can see how much it really has! I used to live only several blocks from there when it was first beginning to go from an 'industrial'-type-building wasteland toward an arts community for local and visiting artists. I considered buying a building at the time... so much for that walk in the park :? !

Hi there,

Simon, I see you're in Montreal. Do you listen the CBC? Manx has been given a lot of airplay. He's actually becoming quite well known. The problem with Canadian artists, has always been getting them heard south of the border, with some notable exceptions, of course.

Linda.

Harry's home is Salt Spring Island, B.C. - Canada.

It's a wee place

Hey Adrian,

Salt Spring may be a wee place but it's as beautiful as a garden full of wood-nymphs. I have a friend who lives there. We worked together back in the 80's , I think you know her.

Yes, many artistic folk over there. But the high priced housing is turning what was once a nice, artistic community into a get-away for movie stars in their 5 million dollar mansions. Such a shame I remember that place from the 70's and there was nothing there, really.

Yes, ssisland...takes me back. In a sense it's the Hydra of the Pacific Northwest. Except colder. Practically the entire 'original' Vancouver pack of musicians moved over there. You can't be old enough to remember those oldies, Adrian??? Like Bachman, Henderson, Valdy, etc.??? Aye, 'tis a grande place. I wish I could live there. But I don't, so I'll bow out of this thread. My heart beats a little faster when I think of Salt Spring.

See ya,
Linda.

Well, Linda, you've certainly made this place sound magical and enticing!! I have a really strong sense of the place from all of your description. Did the locals pronounce it "Sissland" or "SS Island"? The former really has a casualness and warmth befitting your description. Makes you want to just pack up and go... to find a spot the local, wealthy authorities aren't aware of... and build a tiny place in the woods.

I'll bet Adrian does know some of those people. I'll be interested to find out.

Simon, I'm pleased you've discovered Harry! :D Over the past few years, I've become a bit of Harry groupie (as he tours down under quite regularly)! Yes, and I've even been fortunate enough (at our more friendly artist accessible venues) to have a couple of short but enjoyable chats with him after shows/appearances. He is very approachable and just a real cool guy who hasn't allowed - what success he has - to put him on a pedestal where he cannot relate genuinely to the 'average Joe'! Also, he said he hopes to meet LC one day, as he considers LC to be a great lyricist. 8)

If anyone gets the chance to see Harry perform, don't miss the opportunity, as I believe you won't be disappointed. He excels with a range of instruments, including the intriguing and mesmerising mohan veena (which he learnt over 5 years, under the tutelage of its master, V M Bhatt):!:

Cheers :)

Hey Andrew. Thanks. I heard him on a radio show and he really stood out, so I had to do some research to find out who he was. For a good week now I've been listening to every thing I could find from him. He's quite unique and is for sure now a permanent part of my musical scenary. He'll be in the Montréal area 3 times this year so I might attend even a few times.

Searching his record company web site (Dog my Cat) led me to discover also his friend and your fellow Australian Yeshe. Wow, best World music I heard in a long time. Addictive indeed...

Interesting that Manx says he'd like to meet with LC. How creative could to two of them be together if ever a collaboration were to occur? Surely better then anything with Bono...

aye, I've been travelling - and just back home, seeing mention of this fair isle brought me to post ( :

quite right, Linda - on all counts - the good, and the not so good; Salt Spring IS paradisical, and it IS becoming (or has become) a resort for the rich; if you stay in the woods and natural spots, it's as magical as ever ( :

and, living here, in musical terms, I see/hear plenty of Bill Henderson, who's been active with the island folk club, as is/has Valdy; Mr. Bachman doesn't take to the local stages as much as Bill or Valdy - but, at most, there's one degree of separation - all of us go to the same island printers for CD packages, the same Fall Fair for jams - musical and otherwise :D

Valdy is a real troubador still - and as much as I run into him here at the recycling depot and post office+, I'm just as likely to meet him in a hotel lobby in some far-off province, or arrive in a town with Allison for a gig, only to hear that Valdy passed through days earlier

Harry is a road-warrior himself - and, again, we run into each other on ferries, each going in opposite directions - from/to tours...

Lizzy, it's not happened yet that Allison and Harry have been on island at the same time, but, the woman, Billie Woods, whose photographs of Alley have been her last two album covers, is Harry's sitter many a night - and, Jordy Sharp, one of Canada's finest bluegrass musicians, was the man behind the soundboard for Allison's live shows - before Jordy unplugged from that scene to concentrate on his recording studio and productions for Dog My Cat Records...

't'is a small world, overall, and, here it's tres small!

Lizzy, it's not happened yet that Allison and Harry have been on island at the same time . . .
It's only a matter of time. As someone once said, tres small... .

Interesting account on all the rest, as well as your off-the-beaten track paradise remaining. That's how the Keys are, too.
