Doing nothing is the hardest task of all (For Babz)

Doing nothing is the hardest task of all (For Babz).

The light which has just smashed straight into his eyes
Searing through to the back of his brain
Has clamped on the rear of his skull with its claws
And his body cried out from the pain

He couldn’t control his reactions at all
As his body withdrew to regain
Some semblance of normal composure
While it suffered until once again
He could open his eyes which remained tightly shut
And still burning from deep in his brain

All he could do and he knew it
Was to sit tight and wait ‘til it passed
Like a kick in the balls it washed through him
Like waves made from hot shards of glass
Who was it, who’d turned this harsh light on?
Throwing light on this putrefied pool
You did, you’d fumbled in darkness
And discovered the switch, you blind fool,
Which had turned all your life into blackness
And left you in such misery
That no physical pain can compare with
It pervades all existence for thee

Whatever you were is no longer
Whoever you were cannot be
No longer to function as normal
Simple acts of remembrance of she
Who you’d held with devotion in your arms
When you flowered, and were showered with love
Your limbs and your heart are redundant
For the one who you’d placed far above

You’re aware of the space all around you
It has grown while you lived in your dream
The trust which you had built your love on
Was a gossamer veil with no seams
But the light which now shows you your folly
In believing a truth as it seemed
Displays the extent of your blindness
Your nightmare replaces fond dreams

You’re no longer enjoying the hope of a call
The thrill of deferred joy is gone
The tingle which met you on waking each day
Now a memory which goes on and on

This void that you’ve found that carries no sound
Is all that your heart can endure
You’d be grateful in getting a kick in that heart
Being noticed by she you adore
Oh! To lie ‘neath her table and willingly take
Any scraps which she’d throw on the floor

So now you’re beginning to gather yourself
And to taste the first flush of your grief
Blindly seeing, that your eyes and your heart
Have been skewered
By a lion while you were asleep

And how many of us would fall at this point?
But you know you are greater than this
Now is the time to do nothing at all
Saying nothing but sending a kiss

So I wait and hold on and am peaceful
For the mind of the captive is free
To meander through thoughts of deep anguish
And allow the spirit to see
A heart that no one knows better
Which no other lover can free
To float as light as a feather
And as fine as the bubbles we see
On the wings of a faraway dragon
Who knows naught if any of thee
He soars over colours and senses
He swoops and he hangs on the breeze
Yet the Sun outshines his defences
It’s at night that he squirms where he please
Chameleons pale in his presence
And he’ll cut you off at the knees
Your meat he will soil in your presence
In response to your unspoken pleas
Fear not for my heart, which is heavy,
For it is soaring much higher than he

Your soul has been given so cheaply
Self-respect you’d attained has now gone
In your eyes and your heart you are nothing
Of that which arrived in the Sun
But the one who you left in the mourning
Still lingers to hold you as one
Are you blind to the point of adorning
Your dreams of false love with aplomb?
For a fool and her legs are soon parted
By sweet poisonous words, one by one

Can you look at those eyes in the mirror?
Were they yours even when you were young?
Are they yours now you’ve betrayed your birthing?
Are they blind from the site of a tongue?
The promise on leaving your mother
In a hospital bed long ago
Your praises they sang to each other
A full life and to stay ever young
You entered this world as all nature
But the nurture you’ve chosen is wrong

Pleasures that pass in an instant
Flash wildly across you and he
Selfish sparks that are not for another
A crescendo of passion for thee?
In mourning they’re now in oblivion
Bright lights on a ship lost at sea
Do you really believe he’s your lover?
Looking away while he stands for a pee?
Warts and all, were a part of your being
As I caressed you and set yourself free
You are mine for as long as you own me
You are mine when I’m left all alone
You were mined by a snake with a prick-axe
Do I mind if he took you while prone?
Get behind me you emerald devil
My love was not given to roam
Like some cheap magic spell that could level
And raze to the ground any home
My love has no value within me
But it worships your soul in this poem.

Byron, a master stroke!

WOW! WOW! and an honorific BOW!

This exceeds my greatest expectations...
not that I'm surprised.

Thank you for indulging an old woman.
You are truly genius loci.
I adore this version, and when you publish
your Collected Poems, I hope you will include
Doing Nothing (Version 2) with MY dedication!

Thank you so much.

Dear Byron/Babz ~

I'm so glad you responded quickly, Babz. I didn't feel it was right to comment until you had done so....and was so anxious to say what a QUICK STUDY you are, Byron!!! Wrapped those words right around Babz's request so quickly and brilliantly....and though I'm certain I must know better, it would appear effortlessly. That book will be in print in no time! 8) Way to go, Babz, making such a request. Now, we can have Version 1 and Version 2, just like Chelsea Hotel.

And speaking of Chelsea Hotel: Janis would have been 60 years old tomorrow! She died at 27! The Essential Janis Joplin (sound familiar?) went on sale this January 14th. And as she said:

In this world, if you read the papers, Lord,
You know everybody's fighting on with each other.
You got no one you can count on, baby,
Not even your own brother.
So if someone comes along,
He's gonna give you some love and affection
I'd say get it while you can, yeah!
Honey, get it while you can,
Hey, hey, get it while you can,
Don't you turn your back on love, no, no!
