I'm new to the forum so I'm sorry if this has come up before but I was watching the sounds of the sixties last night on BBC 4 (a compilation of 60's music clips, for those who don't know) and it featured Manfred Mann singing My name is Jack, at the end it I swear it claimed that Leonard Cohen co-wrote this song?
Is this true? or have they got it wrong
I've never heard about it before and can't seem to find anything about the song on any Cohen websites (although i may have missed it).
The only thing i have found is the chords and lyrics http://www.guitartabs.cc/fetchfile.php?fileid=12601285
which give the writing credits to John Simon. I presume this is the same John Simon who produced Songs Of Leonard Cohen. As the song was released in mid-1968, could Leonard of co-wrote the song with John Simon during the making of Songs Of. If so is Leonard credited? or was it just a case of him contributing a few lines to the song and so he didn't get a credit. Or has the John Simon connection somehow ended up with the story of him co-writing it with Cohen.
If any one knows I'd be intrested to hear, cus it doesn't sound like a Leonard Cohen Song to me (apart from maybe the 'Greta Garbo home for wayward boys and girls' line, it sounds more like an attempt to write somethin similar to Manfred Manns previous hit The Mighty Quinn (Quinn The Eskimo) written by Dylan)

My Name Is Jack, a Cohen song?
I must say I never heard about this before. probably John Simon-connection is the cause of crediting LC, as you said. Anyway, John Simon has his own website and you can easily ask him via email about this...?

Love the new av., Jerry, definitely looks like a 'grey'. You know, the being in just about every 'abduction' book? There was a similar drawing on the cover of a book called 'Communion' by 'Whitley Streiber,' I think the author's name is. Sorry for the 'off-topic' remark, but it's so striking, I just wanted to say something.

I hope someone has or will connect with John Simon to see if Leonard really did.
Did they play the song, Paula? How'd it sound?

It was in those days in which every singer is a friend of the other singer, who used to hang out together and Leonard Cohen was no exception. In fact LC "is" the ultimate friend of so many artists at the time I am not surprised that he may have helped iron out a few tunes, chords and keys on this song as a favor.
