Here's an idea, feel free to beat it up as needed:

While sitting and thinking about how I would approach the concept of staying in the hotel room next to Leonard Cohen, I realized that this works much better for me as a short story then as a poem.

I immediately knew how I would approach it as a story, I could hear his voice in the dialogue we would have and how I would tie it into other life experiences of mine.

As I said, feel free to beat my idea up, but I think it's a good idea and a new challenge for our forum. I don't recall there ever being a story contest vs. a poetry contest.

And Joe, if you read this, thanks for the best laugh I've had in awhile.

Hats Off to John K. I absolutely support his idea. Let's have our inaugural short story contest here. But don't let Jarrko know we are misbehaving on a designated poetry and music forum.

Jarrko is a severe disciplinarian as Joe will remember from NY after he continuously made animal noises during my welcome speech. For the rest of the Event Jarrko refused to speak to Joe and threatened to lock him in a small room with an endless loop tape playing only Bird On The Wire and Jazz Police.

I must however admit that I found it a wee bit disappointing that our Leader from Finland acted out some clichéd national stereotype role by then publicly thrashing Mr Way with a birch thrashing thing, you know a bundle of twigs used in saunas or whatever.

Most of the audience wept for Joe in harmony with his wounds, but I wept for Jarkko's lack of imagination.

Dear Michael-

This is absolutely my last post before I head for the area where I can truly hear the "lake water lapping in low sounds by the shore." (Someone ought to use that line in a poetry competition somewhere).

I had to come out of hiding to correct a couple of your over the top misconceptions.

First, The only animal noises that I made were animals that normally hibernate "in winter." Formost was the bear who only makes soundless friendly faces as it eats you. Then I made the "beaver slap" which was more a reaction to some of the more outragious contentions that you made about our poor chairman, Geoff.

Secondly, I can't believe that you refuse to use the technical language where it is appropriately applied. Jarkko's whip is correctly called, "A birch thrashing thingy" -when will you finally get things right? You have obviously been neglecting the zen homework that I prescribed at the West End. You will listen to "Bird" and "Jazz Police" in Berlin. And you will enjoy it!

P. S. John K.-as usual your ideas are excellent. It could only be improved by your turning it into a song and performing it for us.

i think the short story would be interesting...

but there's a lot of guidelines and questions. first of all, how long would it have to be? and how long can it NOT be? after all, there IS going to be a judge having to read all of this. plus, i think a short story might take more time to write than a poem. some of us don't have that kind of time. anyone got anything else to add?

How about 1,000 words max?

Teratogen, your dilemma reminded me of the idea of the Mini Saga. A Mini Saga must be exactly 50 words. A Mini Saga must tell a story. The story must have a beginning, a middle and an end. The title may have no more than 15 words, and is not counted as part of the Saga.
